I've acquired a small hoard of Vietnam KM#4 2 Dong 1946

Krause (helpful as ever!) states varieties exist, does anyone know whether these are documented anywhere

I'll post some pictures if any clean up to show something significant

Speaking generally, don't clean coins !

Why would they need cleaning ?

Pertinax, Tropical rain forest, War & Time - none a happy environment for bronze

Vietnam-Viet-Minh-2-Dong-1946

The above are best I can do via acetone & verdicare, I suspect the ones in olive oil are beyond redemption

There appears to be variation in the basal bows on both sides, also the number of fronds in the palm leaves framing Ho Chi Minh

Coin top left, looks totally different, more coppery and "softer" than the others which appear to be brass rather than bronze

Coin top, 2nd from left, shows distinct saw marks indicating the blank was cut from a brass rod, (a bit like Russian wire money)rather than cut from a sheet.

These were clearly made in difficult circumstances, immediately post WWII and fighting the French.

Any references to this issue would be most welcome

Thanks, David

The only variety that I am aware of is on the star side text reads CONG NOA instead of CONG HOA.
