NoD, how do they do airbrushing and how can you tell? Just trying to learn. Thanks.

Quote: NoD, how do they do airbrushing and how can you tell? Just trying to learn. Thanks. It looks like airbrushing to me. I can't be sure. I've seen a guy apply powdered graphite and other substances to coins using an air brush, one of the many unscrupulous methods he used to alter coins.

I would like to hear about that as well in addition to how you were able to tell. Thanks!

Quote: I would like to hear about that as well in addition to how you were able to tell. Thanks! Long story short, a guy I knew through unrelated business learned I was interested in coins. At some point I let him see some of my coins. He told me he could make new coins look old and demonstrated his technique.

That is certainly a colorful description for the coin. I just love this part of the description: I can't tell you the grade because the speech nazis won't let me, but if you message me I think I can tell you that way without being censored. (Is this really America?)

Picture coloring not definitive, but at least they're offering... Quote: expect all coins to be very nice looking and problem-free unless otherwise noted in the description. And bid or buy with confidence- if you disagree with our description or just don't like it, return it for a cordial refund. If we were at fault in any way, we will even pay your return postage back. We are fair-minded people and our feedback says it all

Still not sure what the point is? Are you saying this is a new reproduction coin that is airbrushed with graphite to look old?

If what you are saying is true, this person is a flagrant lier.

I *tentatively* think it's an honest B-4 - the reverse cracks at the second S in STATES and the A in AMERICA lend credence - but the toning is a red flag. Note that it differs only in intensity, not hue. I rather expect that color to be darker in hue, even if just a bit, where it's thicker towards the rim. That's what toning does.
That's not a slam dunk, stranger things have happened, but it really doesn't look good to me and I suspect you'll find strong hairlining under that "toning."
I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens.

I would want it spanned before putting any money down on it.
Nice variety!
