I have a few Vatican coins I got in the early days of my collection. I was wondering if anyone of these are silver?

100 L.-1967
5 L. 1953
50 L.1966
1 L. 1953
10L. 1963
20 L. 1966
2 L. 1952

Thanks

Yes, I do collect Vatican coins too - primarily euro pieces though. And no, none of the ones you list is a silver coin ...

Thanks. I got them for free so I am not really too upset. They should start up a few conversations at the coin club Tomorrow.

CoinCollector2012,

I have a couple of Vatican coins dating back to the 19th century. I find then rather interesting and most of them have very low mintages. Any conversations pertaining to them at the coin club meeting yesterday?

Guess that is the problem with having/showing non-US coins in the US. ;) In case you wonder what is depicted on the pieces:

1 lira 1953 / 2 lire 1952 / 5 lire 1953
Those are from a series dealing with virtues. L.1: Temperantia, L.2: Fortitudo, L.5: Iustitia.

10 lire 1963
Virtues series continued: (L.10: Prudentia)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_virtues
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theological_virtues

20 lire 1966 / 50 lire 1966
The shepherd with the lamb is a reference to John 10:2 (good shepherd).

100 lire 1967
In that year the Vatican issued a series dedicated to the 1900th anniversary of St. Peter and St. Paul's martyrdom. The coin is part of that series.

What problem? Ever since some guy pulled a New Guinea shilling and a Victorian dime out of his 6/$1 bin I have been planning a long trip down South

Call it problem, call it peculiarity, or whatever. ;) And yes, I know that a tiny fraction of the collectors in the USA (not sure about Canada) actually show some interest in, gasp, foreign coinage, hehe. Oh well, with the descriptions I just tried to make up for the fact that the OP got hardly reaction to those Vatican coins at his coin club.

I have 5 Vatican coins in my collection, but I don't really collect coins from this small country.

20 Lira, 2001
200 Lira, 2001
500 Lira, 2001
1'000 Lira, 2001
50 Cent, 2012

I have two. One of them is ridiculously common (50 euro cent 2012, I think), and the other is probably most valuable as a conversation piece (50 lira 1962, the Second Vatican Council commemorative). The 50 lira was bought for $2.5 or so; the euro coin was a gift from a fellow collector (who got a few of these in change while visiting Rome).
I'd really want to get something more unusual; one particularly weird goal is "one of these Sede Vacante issues". I know I probably couldn't afford it, however - and even if I could, it's not like it comes up very often, either - so that's just one of those vaguely-defined mental goals that I only follow on if I get really lucky (I think I have about a dozen of these "goals" for my collection - 1870s German states, US type set, very late Roman bronzes, anything to do with France...)

You cannot get things right for everybody. ;) In the early years of the euro, the Vatican issued no or hardly coins at face, and collectors complained. Now that they issue more, collectors complain ... The four countries that may issue euro coins without being members of the European Union (San Marino, Monaco, Andorra as from this year, and the Vatican) have to issue a certain portion of their annual volume at face. According to the 2010-2012 Monetary Agreements that means:

VA: at least 51% of the coins
SM: at least 70%
AD / MC: at least 80%

But of course these countries still want to make money with the money. :) So only certain denominations are issued at face; others have to be purchased in sets.
