I'm looking for some census info on this note, rarity, and perhaps a ballpark value. Only found one in similar condition and it sold for $621.00 in 2002 (2002 auction: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...&lotNo=8082) -- that's 10+ years ago. Just looking to see if anyone possibly has any updated info. NOTE: Price tag on the sleeve is incorrect. The sleeve was home to another note and forgot to remove the tag before photos.

If HA has only sold one in the past few years then they are probably pretty scarce. You'll probably have to go to "Track & Price" and sign up to get more info.
I like the signature of the Cashier. Do you know if "Francis" was a man or woman? It's tough to find Nationals that were signed by women. I know of at least two banks here in Texas that had women as officers and as signers.

Track & Price - only 10 small size notes(6 - $20s). Most recent sale was in March 2011 at Lyn Knight for $517, but grade shows as Fine 12. The price guide listings show Fine at $500 and VF at $625.

" Do you know if "Francis" was a man or woman? "
Looks like "FrancEs" to me and not "FrancIs". Most Frances's are women. Not real feminine-looking penmanship (penwomanship?), however.

I went to "Find a Grave" and looked for "Frances E Miller" in Pearisburg VA that died after 1935. (The last series 1929 notes were printed in 1935)
Turns out that Frances Easley Miller was born June 8th, 1881 and died Mar 16th, 1964 and is buried at the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Virginia. So, that would put her in the right window of time for the Cashier's job.
Her spouse is listed as Walter Peck Miller (1876-1910) on Find A Grave. Would be nice to find the banks history and see if he was an employee (or shareholder) at any time prior to her employment.
Heritage shows there are 8 small notes in the census from this bank. Not rare, but still a small number all things considered. Apparently, signed by a woman too so that increases the collectibility!
All in all a nice note!

Thanks for the plethora of information on this note. Never would have begun to look to see if any of the signatures were female or if they would bring extra collectability either. Very neat! Also downloaded Track & Price and using their 30-day trial.. Liking it so far.

Frances was definitely a woman. Found her listed as the assistant cashier of that bank in an article written about Virginia banking history. If you would like the linky please PM me.

Can you link it here, Westernsky? It's not letting me PM.

Clarence King was an organizer of the bank and vice President. M.L. Harrison was the President and Mrs Frances E Miller was the asst cashier. She became Cashier in the banks later years. Both Harrison and Miller are the signers of your note! Enjoy!

Interesting read, thanks for finding it! I may have to print off that article and keep it with the banknote for a little history behind it.

I went back and looked at the series '02 note that Heritage sold a few years ago and King signed as the cashier and Harrison signed as the Pres. Now, if a large turned up with Mrs Miller's signature that would be a heck of a find!
