duncanbishop24, a young man from Vermont, attends a university here in Connecticut. And he has never been to a coin show. He has a lot of questions as to how to prepare. I am sure that he is not the only collector who needs our help. So, this topic will attempt to answer these questions. It is open to both new collectors and experienced coin show goers. Please consider helping.

This has come up many, many times. There are a few on this forum that know how to find and bring up old posts. Sure hope they find this one and make a link to some of those. Some posts were extensive in suggestions and ideas. One odd thing about coin shows is out of all the sub forums in this web site, there is NO place to list new coin shows. A place for old ones but no place for new ones. Would be nice to have a separate place for all coin shows since so many ask about them.

general advice, 1st coin show, prepare, prepare, prepare, make a definitive list, stick to it, walk the whole show before buying, do not spend more money than you can afford as this will cause problems with bills and spill over to not wanting to go again

Awesome thread! I'll be attending my first coin show on
Feb 16th! I'll subscribe to this thread and hopefully
some links to the mentioned threads will be posted. I
agree that a list of upcoming coin shows would be nice. I
finally found a list by Googling "coin shows". That's how
I found one coming up to go to. I'm pretty excited! I've
saved up a few hundred just for this. I've had a list
made up for quite a while of what I'm wanting.
One thing I was wondering, do the coin dealers at coin
shows negotiate on prices? I've had luck with that at LCS
and that's how I'm able to afford what I've gotten thus
far.

John1, I must've been typing my reply when you posted. Thanks!
commems, I couldn't find it when I was trying to find one. I too thought I'd seen it before on here.

I've only been to a handful of coin shows and I have one problem that's fairly consistent. Dealers seem to get annoyed when I offer prices that are consistent with historical auction prices. I get, "That's even below dealer's price!" And I want to ask, "Why do I already have thirty I bought for that price even though I'm not a dealer?" I dont because I want to be respectful, but it prevents me from making purchases. Another popular comment is to mention how hard to find a particular coin is, without failing to mention how hard to find dark side collectors can be.
Its worth noting that I buy almost exclusively European coins. And my problems seem to stem from the fact that Krause is overpricing those coins even though Krause is supposed to reflect actual prices. I've been forced to only be able to buy series that are appropriately priced in Krause, or so cheap it doesn't really matter.
The typical advise is to walk away, and I do, but before I know it I've walked away from every dealer at the show (that has the coins I want). Is this a common experience?

Go with a list of coins you want, bring a price guide, be polite to dealers, bring cash.

Correct, Coin Shows, past, present, and future, are found here... http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...FORUM_ID=119Remember, this is member generated content. The staff is not finding and posting every show out there.

Personally I don't like haggling so I just ask what they need for the coins and typically you get about a 10% discount. Not always be that seems to be common. Probably the best way to find coin shows is to google your state organization. Most states have a state numismatic organization. Try (Your state name) Numismatic Association or Numismatic Society. You will usually find a website and they will almost always have listings of all the clubs and shows in your state. These lists tend to be kept much more up to date than listing on places like coinshows.com or the ANA website. If you live close to a state border google the neighboring states association as well. You might find close by shows in the next state over.

I would suggest looking for just one thing, maybe something that's on your list, but not impossible, just difficult... That way you can visit a lot of dealers and see a lot of things and learn an awful lot that way. If you go with a big list, you may well find a dealer with a lot of it and spend a lot of time and $ and then realize the other 90% of the dealers also had choices. I usually make two passes around the room, sometimes three. The first pass I'm looking for things on my list (often several dealers will be busy and rather than wait I'll pick then up on the 2nd pass). Then I do another pass looking at everything I overlooked in my focused pass(es). Also understand unless it's a small show and you spend a lot of time, you won't see everything. That's OK. As for haggling, most dealers will - if asked - knock off 5 or 10% the written price - if nothing else they don't have to pay the ebay fees although they did have to rent the table and drive to the show. Other dealers don't have prices on the 2x2s or slabs and have to look it up on the Gray Sheets. If they look up using Coin World, expect them to ask for about 75% of that - if they ask for 100%, IMHO they have an inflated sense of the value of their merchandise.

If you don't have a great financial resources a budget will loom prominent. Easy to control spending: Leave your credit / debit card at home. Figure out what you can afford to spend and take that limit, IN CASH. That way, you won't blow your budget.
When you get there, have a good look around as to what is available, and what you can afford. Keep a note on every item that interests you, and it's price. When you have reviewed the whole show, go back to those items that attracted your interest, and negotiate on those.
If there is an item which you like but cannot afford to buy, take careful note of it, AND IT'S CONDITION, and the dealer's business card. Once you have established personal contact, it is then much easier to negotiate over the 'phone at a later date.

First, many thanks for all of the replies so far. I plan to meet duncan and also paddy murphy ( if his wife lets him) for a impromptu CCF meeting. And as the CCF will be supplying handouts for the kids and flyers I believe that we members will be treated well. I'll see what elfin magic I can perform. Amazing what a little preparation and a a LOT of chutzpa can accomplish. The organizer is pleased with the efforts of the CCF to help. It's a club and not a commercial show. I have met a couple of American CCF members at a coin show in Sydney. They had come to Australia to attend short university courses.
Ended up having quite a chin wag with them! Mate-ship now comes internationally!
