just curious, what creates the dark almost burnt looking marks on some silver dollars?

Likely toning, possibly environmental damage. If you're talking about any silver dollar in particular, post pictures and we can help you.

this was the coin I was referring to ! didn't use to have dark spots, noticed the plastic on the 2x2 was slightly ripped :(
