Does anyone have any idea what caused the dent in the "N" in the word "ONE" ? I will admit I do not know much about errors but something tells me that maybe this *might* be more then after market damage.... any thoughts?

This looks like PMD to me. Looks like a gouge created that ridge of metal.

Cracks in the die, will be raised on the surface of the coin, they would not show up as dents on the surface of your coins, just the opposite would happen during the minting process. To make an imprint or dent into the surface of a coins device, something must be in the way of the striking die, grease, debris, cloth, another coin etc... I attached a pic of what a real die crack would look like on your coin.
