Quote: I don't think PCGS gives PL designations except on Morgans. Why would they only do it on Morgans. IMO, this deserves a PL designation.

I've seen some coins other than Morgans with PL designations before in PCGS slabs. I really missed the mark on this one, I thought it would be way higher up there! I think the fact it's not a proof, dsfreeworld mentioned divorce from the price, the photo is a bit soft in focus, and I had been up for 30 hours straight really got me, at least I wasn't spending my money on it at the time A really nice coin $3K does seem a bit one the high side for a MS63 example, is it CAC by chance? Long term hold I think you'll do fine though.

Hard to say if Proof or MS. IF Proof, I'd say 64/65. If MS then 66+ and definitely PL.

Quote:Looking past the label on the slab, which might even say PL, how do we know it's not a proof coin? What does the TPG look at to decide? Not arguing here - just trying to learn. Fair enough. Given the absolute rarity of this issue in any Mint State grade - the price of an MS63 will buy virtually any 1865 Proof, much less a higher Mint State grade - I'm assuming that the TPG will subject the coin to the most rigorous of observation before declaring it a Business Strike. Given the combined total mintage of only 10,500 I'm expecting they all came from the same die pair, so die characteristics are out. One then closely examines the differences which make a Proof - sharpness of the rim, filling of the deepest and most complex device details, the like. Here's a comparison. Below are two 1865's one MS and one PR, both 66's. Kinda obvious - not even considering the finish - which is the Proof, eh? Look at strike details.

Oh, wow.
I would have guessed PR64 by the looks of it.
Even after knowing it's a business strike I'd say MS64PL.
For 3K$, I think you got a great deal, and I'd definitely submit it to CAC if not for a regrade/crossover.

I would not normally beat a thread to death on one of my own coins but in hand the color is just electric and ridiculous and I felt like I just had to share Also here is the slab Thanks for looking Goodbye

It's a lovely coin. Quote: I will not have a single emotional attachment to this coin Do I sense that might be changing? :) BTW, I'd be afraid to resubmit and have it come back PR. I think when it comes time to sell, quality photos (and a good sales pitch) at a place like Heritage would get bidders, like the posters here, to see it as undergraded. Let the coin sell itself, in my humble opinion.

Quote: Do I sense that might be changing? :) Nah, lol, I do love her but not as much and I'll live cash to pay for text books and meal plans in 7 years I will not resubmit this coin, it's going to CAC as part of a group of 10. MS63 CAC will be just fine. I agree with everything you said

I'm new to this CAC thing, so forgive me for distracting this thread, but for this particular coin what does CAC do for you? Verify that it's not PR?

CAC would say its choice for the grade and can make it more valuable on the resale market.

CAC will confirm it is not a proof and apply a sticker if it is solid for the assigned grade. If CAC feels it is undergraded and a lock for upgrade if re-submitted, they will apply a gold sticker.
