Good Morning: I have this 1943 Canadian penny. The front of it is in not bad shape, but the back of it isn't. What do you think happened to this coin? I just find it so funny (and strange) that the back is so messed up, while the front is not? You would think the front would have something More on it....? Do you have any ideas or have seen this story before? I was just wondering about this -- if anything, or nothing? Thanks Edited by The Villiage Idiot 02/01/2014 11:28 am

I'd call it road kill.

Definitely a drive way coin, I picked up a US cent the other day from a parking lot and it was about as bad as that, the only reason I knew it was older than 1982 was the deep scratches showing fresh copper and no zinc, the date was almost impossible to tell even with magnification.
Edit: The same with mine, back is fine, a little rubbed down but the front was on the pavement and is scratched beyond belief.

Looks like that poor cent was run over a bunch then circulated after someone finally picked it up.

Darn shame it got dropped and run over - otherwise it was a cent that would have probably told you that it looks good for it's age.

Wait don't spend it, glue it into a folder so you can only see the good side Your post inspired me, check out A Coin's Life... https://goccf.com/t/168956

I agree. Looks like road rash.
On another note, in coins the heads side is the front (obverse) and the tails side is he back (reverse).

My story is as follows:
The penny was stuck to a surface by means of something very tacky like coffee or coke and adhered itself to that surface for quite some time. Someone found it and managed to separate its from whatever it was attached to and then tried scraping the gunk off with a steel semi pointed object maybe a small flat head screwdriver. Just my opinion. I think if it was road kill then there would be considerably more damage and wear to the reverse.

That what I was thinking. Maybe it got stuck in some New asphalt on the road and one side was protected till someone saw it and dug it out. Even if it was wedged against some metal somewhere -- you still think the other side *would* have some type of wear. Just Weird.....

I like the Gunk and Screwdriver idea, I would have gone with a rusty nail Quote: I picked up a US cent the other day from a parking lot and it was about as bad here is it... yes I'm going to have to work on my lighting. The face is scratched up but the monument looks like it was only lightly cleaned, there are a few dings in the rim, but there are slight dings in your good side too. after years in pockets and hands that can ware down. Mine was in a busy parking lot so had not been there long, if I spend it... ( it's a 1980, so that is not going to happen) but if I did it would end up loosing the shine on the gouges and evening out over time. If it's just moved back and forth and not flipped then one side can look good while the other is all ripped up. Edit: forgot to mention the scratched side was down and the smooth side was up for tires to rub on it.
