Hello everyone!

I just purchased this coin from a local coin shop today because I admired the design and it was in BU condition. (I only paid silver price for it.) When I got it home, I noticed that most of the reverse shows doubling with splits in the serifs. I would like to know if anyone else has one of these, and if this is the normal die (Master Die Doubling) or if this is a die variety. Krause does not list a DDR for this, but then I don't expect Krause to do so. (By the way, I do know the difference between Strike Doubling and die doubling, and this is definitely not Strike Doubling.)

I have taken some closeups of some of the more prominent areas of doubling and highlighted them with red arrows. I think it will be pretty easy to see.

I'd love to hear thoughts from some sub-Saharan specialists.

Here is the information I already know:

South Africa
1969 1 Rand
KM80.2 "SUID-AFRIKA" Obverse
Mintage of 506,000
.800 fine silver (.3858 oz ASW)

Thank you!

Certainly appears to be a double die. What made you examine it this closely to begin with?

PS: Welcome to the forum, we have chatted on cointalk.

Hey! I remember you! :)

Well, if I'm being perfectly honest, my eyesight is still good enough to notice stuff like this. I have a 1940 Mercury dime that has similar doubling on the olive branches (but apparently it's too minor to be classified as a the first DDR for that date/mm.) I think it was the doubling on the vertical bars of the fasces next to the lion that caught my eye somehow. Once I looked at it through a loupe, I knew it was something interesting. Of course, not having any references for foreign varieties, I still don't know if this is relatively common or desirable...

The notched serif in EX clinches it for me.
I've trained my eyes to look for overdates, but you have documented this well.

Not sure if this will help with identifying your coin. Let me know if you want me to try a clearer picture. Debbie.
