I love Medieval history, and my heritage goes back to Spain, so its no wonder that I find Spanish coins of the Middle Ages interesting as a result. For nearly all of the Middle Ages, the Christians of the Iberian peninsula were locked in an arduous struggle called the Reconquista, against the Muslim kingdoms that had come to dominate large parts of the peninsula ever since their invasion in the year 711. It wasn't until 1492 that the last Muslim state in Spain fell, just in time to allow the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella to focus their time, attention, money, and men, to the exploration of the new lands that awaited across the Atlantic. This particular coin is a silver denier/denaro (struck in Toledo) of Alfonso I King of Aragon and Navarre, who ruled from 1104 to 1134. Alfonso was also known as the Battler or the Warrior, due to his distinguished military career in the Reconquista. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfonso_the_Battlerhttp://charlemagne64.tripod.com/alfonso.htmlAlfonso I, King of Aragon and NavarreObv: +ANFVS REX, legend surrounding bust facing left Rev: +TOLLETA, legend around cross with two stars in field Toledo mint Edited by VisigothKing 02/05/2014 7:59 pm

very cool coin VK, cool bust really...more abstract than primitive looking. I don't have anything from 12th century western europe yet, also on my giant "to get list".

Yeah the style to me just screams dark ages, even thought the coin is around a century too late!

I have a few Spanish coins of this era that I've been meaning to identify myself. Is there any good reference (printed or online) for these?

I myself don't know of any; this is only my second foray into medieval Spanish coins (excluding my Visigothic coins). Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along and provide useful info/links.

Interesting coin, this "dinero" was struck in Toledo (Castilla kingdom) because Alfonso I, king of Aragón and Navarre, married with Doña Urraca, daughter of the last king of Castilla and Leon (die without sons), so both were regents of Castilla and Leon kingdoms from 1109 to 1114, and he minted coins with his name during this period in Toledo.

Don't know any online reference which covers a lot, but as per printed ones: Cayon & Castan "Monedas espanolas" (various editions of this have a different starting point, the 1984 edition started with Celt-Iberian coinage while later issues started with the Visigoths). And the more extensive one (seven volumes) from Alvarez Burgos "Catalogo General de las Monedas Espanolas".
