Eddio...are you trying to pull one on us? From the detail and other markers I see, this looks like one of those giant oversized cents that I see sold on ebay

I have seen one similar to this and I thought for sure I had a doubled die when I saw the "9's"...after further review I think someone at the mint had a very...very heavy hand and they tried to extend the life of the die way beyond its means. Maybe trying to remove clash marks or sharpening up the devices. I am by no means certain of this. But I would take a speculative guess and say Die Abrasion.

I have seen them before. It is either a Grease Filled Die or an over abraded die or a very worn die. John1

Something odd here. Why is Lincoln the only thing effected by this whatever it is? What does the rest of the obverse look like? Are the other letters on the obverse also effected? Please post the rest of the coin. Odd too is the fact that the steps on the reverse are clear, not distorted like Lincoln?

That's one weird LMC--grease-filled obverse die? I really have no idea--I'll wait for someone who knows more.

Eddio,
Any chance you adjusted sharpness or contrast on the first image?

This pic tells a lot more of the story... See the "halo" around the date...I would be the zinc has rotted away beneath the copper. Looks like the copper puffed up and now has collapsed into the void where the zinc was. Just my guess

I agree with John1, it is a strike through grease error. When this happens it not only can cause some devices to disappear, but can cause strange, Salvador Dali-like distortions (like the date in your example) in others. Cool looking, but unfortunately, not uncommon. I keep mine in my "I'm-keeping-this-but-I-don't-know-why" box.
