So ever since I started attending school again I've been using the vending machines in the break room to collect quarters and other change. I simply put in change and hit coin return. So far over the course of about 3 months I've come across at least 75 different ATB Quarters and several bicentennial quarters. I think I may have also broke one of the machines due to the wear and tear of the internal parts. Reason why I am starting this thread though is it would be interesting to see what kinds of coins others have been coming across in vending machines. Like yesterday I actually came across a 2003-S Proof Maine quarter

I tried doing this once with nickels and got a BU 1968-S with nice purple/orange toning, and a 1950 in EF condition. not bad!

I've done this at work a few times on break. I've only had two keepers a bicentennial quarter and a ATB can't remember which one though.
Rest in Peace

Wish I had an understanding of coins and value back then. When silver coins were common in the early 60's.
VA-Collector-12121, you have been hooked.
Good start.

I do the same thing a little bit since vending machine quarters tend to have slightly more variability than other sources. The very best quarters are from rolls you obtain at laudromats or similar operations. Just so you know the coins you receive come from magazines that can't be refilled until the machine is serviced. If you empty it you cause the light that says "correct change only" to come on.

The rolls you get from banks are very nearly as good and it's possible if you find the right bank that they'll be even better. It certainly is a lot easier to pick these up at banks than to empty a machine and you'll get fewer "looks".

I have no love for the vending industry since they kill six or eight people a year with top heavy machines that the government won't require them to bolt down. I've been ripped off more times than I can count. I think of these machines as traps to catch people but no one seems to care since a majority of those killed are thieves. One of these days they'll get sued and then they'll bolt the machines to the floor.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Its weird though because the vending machines at my school will eventually give me back the same quarters I put in.
