Hey All!

I'm new on the forums; I just came into a big lot of wheat pennies. I was going to put them up on ebay in lots, but I came across this penny (see pictures) Can someone help tell me what this is?!

It appears to be just plated post mint damage. No premium or collector value unfortunately.

Looks like spray paint, but it could also be mercury - when we were kids we would rub mercury on pennies, and it would eventually stick on there. Mercury is poisonous.

You can see the copper through the coin wear on the higher devices.

I was thinking about this penny so I have one more question even the sides of the coin are colored silver... do you think it was still rubbed on?

Circulation causes the surfaces to show wear. Your coin is an example of that. The paint could be removed with lacquer thinner. But be careful with this as contact on the skin can really be harmful. If it is plating, it cannot be removed that way. Sometimes people use nail polish on coins, but nail polish can remove that. But with the green on the reverse, it may have a problem in that area?
