Going crazy doing research on which I would prefer to use, I have a stereo microscope I search coins with in the past with my 10x eye piece and my 0-3.5x main lens I would just use my old canon PowerShot A720 IS pointing through the eye piece to take pics. Looking for easier way. Researching a digital eye piece camera like the AmScope mu300 or just an adapter kit for one of my better canon powershot, the S5 IS. please can I get some advice on which is or would be better. Thank you.

In my photomicrography days I used Nikon 990 or 995 cameras with eyepiece adapters that threaded directly to the camera's filter threads. This worked great and eliminated the alignment problems, need for stabilizing the camera on a tripod, etc. It also allowed use of a much higher quality camera than was available for direct application to the microscope. I don't know much about the MU300, but my guess is your A720 will give a better result. Does the A720 have a fixed lens like the 990/995? If so, you could probably figure out how to mount an eyepiece adapter...Ray

The A720 I used was a fixed lens, I just held it up to the microscope lens and tried to align it as I was looking through the screen, not a lot of fun. Know I want to try to use the canon PowerShot S5 IS which is also a fixed lens. You are right much better quality then the mu300, I think the eye piece camera is more like a web cam and 3MP. I found and adapter kit one that is 149.00 and the other is 395.00 but they seem to be almost identicle just different manufactures but both with good reviews.

Do the A720 and S5IS have filter threads? If so, what is the thread diameter? It's possible that the adapters fitting the CoolPix cameras might fit the Canons, or perhaps with a simple step-up/down converter. That would be my recommendation as it worked best for me. I still have several adapters laying around that you could try if this is an option...Ray

Ray, I also have a canon 40D that my wife dropped I guess one too many times, if I could find a place that did not charge an arm and a leg to fix it I could use that camera because it is much better quality and maybe do a setup like yours since I have heard that your setup is the best out there. How much would a setup like yours cost using the 40D if I am able to get it fixed. If I can't get it fixed I would just stick with using the other canon with eyepiece adapter for know.

To the best of my knowledge - and I've owned one - the A720 does not tether. The A650 was the last Canon P&S to tether. Also, the A720 has a protected lens which only extends when the camera is turned on, not easily compatible with an adapter. It's also a zoom.
Concentrate on the S5. It's truly fixed-lens in the mechanical sense, and with the Canon macro add-on lens it's a fantastic coin camera for full-face imaging. It'll have the lens threads to adapt to a stereo eyepiece as well, as long as the mic has similar threads. If two sets of threads exist, there will be an adapter for them somewhere.
