I picked up a set of clipped coins today. Three very nice regular clips, including a very high grade 1944.

There were also two "straight" clips in the lot. I am not sure about either, though I feel better about the 1938. It has a ridge on the edge that looks to me like the edge of a roll of copper. no sign of machining. The 1983 has no obvious signs of machining.

Neither has a particularly obvious Blakeley effect, though I understand straight clips don't always have them.

Thoughts?

Neither are legit. Bring them to Coin Expo in May, and I can show you why...

The 'clips' are big enough to show the Blakesley Effect.
I can't see evidence of that in these examples.

Go to Google Images 'blakesley effect' for an idea.

Disappointing but not surprising. I suspected that the 83 might have been hit with a cleaver-like device. I wasn't sure what to make of the 1938.

No Blakesley mostly because they where garage made. The edge of a straight clip is to me the give away, the edge should not look clipped or sheared because its the edge of the metal being fed into the punches. IMHO.
I'll never make it to the Coin Expo to hear what SPP-Ottawa has to say so I guess I'll just be in suspense.
