South Africa has silver mines so had a strong incentive to keep silver in the coinage for longer than elsewhere.

ZAR coins (1892-1897): sterling (.925 fine)
1898-1922: no coins issued
1922-1950: .800 fine
1950-1964: .500 fine
1 rand coin 1965-1976: .800 fine

You should find the CurrencyDebasement website useful for determining silver content of the more commonly encountered world silver coins.
