Iron Qing Cash From Qianlong, Jiaqing And Daoguang?

jcmworld Pillar of the Community United States 567 Posts	Posted 02/08/2014 10:42 pm Hi all, Had some extra time this afternoon and I was going through my box of unidentified cash coins and I found a few that stuck to a magnet. Great, I thought, some Southern Sung iron cash. So I cleaned off the gunk (they were crusty crusty crusty) and I when I could read the obv. legends I found this to my surprise: 3 - Qianlong 1 - Jiaqing 1 - Daoguang I thought that only Xianfeng issued iron cash during the Qing? Haven't found reference to iron coins from these rulers in Schjoth, Ding or Hartill. They look official, the size is about right and the legends aren't blundered. Were these unofficial issues or were the mintmasters fiddling with the alloy? Unofficial issues tend to be low grade (high zinc/lead) brass, so this has got me scratching my head. Only iron coins will stick to a weak magnet, like those you'll find on a typical refrigerator door. I've noticed those super-strong neodymium magnets can stick weakly to all sorts of alloys that aren't usually "magnetic"; I have a very brassy-looking fake Chinese dollar that doesn't stick to a normal magnet but sticks, weakly, to a neodymium magnet. I have no idea what it's made of, but it's not iron. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. jcmworld Pillar of the Community United States 567 Posts	Posted 02/09/2014 07:48 am I'm using a normal magnet. There are other ferromagnetic metals out there, Iron is just the most abundant. Yours might just have a very low iron or iron oxide content for it to be weakly attracted to a magnet. Report this Post to the Staff
