You guys were wonderful with IDing some odd tokens I've posted previously, so I decided to see if anyone knows what this is (penny for scale):

Unidentified-Childhood-Find

Unidentified-Childhood-Find

It's probably not a coin at all, but does anyone have any idea as to what it might be? Looks like stylized Arabic script. If it helps, I found it 20 years ago in a desert area of southern Israel.

Thanks guys!

I'm no expert AT ALL and am probably way off but could it be an Egyptian slave tag that they put on caught Israelites? The hole is what makes me think this, Just a thought

I am of course no expert either (hence why I'm here!), and it would be awesome if your theory were correct, but I'm pretty sure it's a little more modern than biblical times at least on account of what I think is the Arabic script...

I think a more likely hypothesis would be a decoration from a belly dancer's costume.

This coin is close to yours.
Egyptian.
Unidentified-Childhood-Find
The date reads 1223. (same)

On your coin, the date is written as AH 1223, which translates to about 1807 AD, and the year of accession appears to one.
The coin pictured is year 29.

Very interesting, thank you for the input everyone! I'm still not sure if it is an actual coin or indeed a copy of one that was used as jewelry, but at least I can make sense of the inscription now.

It's quite genuine,
It's definitely a Para, what confused me is that I could not see the tougra - but looking again it's there, it's just that the coin is so thin the design is mirrored on the opposite side (as with the Turkish example below)

Just a thought but if it were a belly dancing piece would you not want smooth edges around the hole? I've no better suggestions though!
