Finally ordered my camera and it will be here tomorrow. I ended up getting the canon t3i with the standard 18-55 lens for now. I'm super excited and can't wait to get it set up. I will definitely be posting pictures for help.

I bought a Canon T3i as my first DSLR camera a little over a year ago. I've been learning to take coin photos with it. After taking a few hundred photos with very disappointing results, I'm getting the hang of it. Now I'm taking high-quality photos, but I have more to learn about using artificial lighting.
In case you haven't already planned on this, three things are a must: 1) a macro lens, 2) a tripod, 3) a remote shutter release. The macro lens will let you get close enough to take closeup photos, and the tripod and remote shutter release will eliminate camera shake--very critical.
Right now I'm using indirect sunlight as a lighting source, but I need to learn to use artificial light to capture luster. From what I've been reading, this requires diffusing the light with a pane of glass or tissue or tracing paper, etc., so it isn't harsh.

There are quite a few posts in regards to lighting that are a huge help. The are also a few very knowledgeable people on here that offer great tips. I plan to get a set up that is listed on here after I get a good grasp on the camera.

Newhobby, Here is a recent image of a civil war token I took with my T3i with the above setup (with diffused sunlight). This is the misspelled "Spoot" variety (click for full resolution):

You guys are just spanking everything I've ever done with that lens. I gotta reattach it and see what I can squeeze out of it.

The color is correct. This is a one cent coin about the same size as a US/Canada cent. The composition is brass, which is why it looks more yellowish.

I also ordered the Nikon 75-300mm. Do you have to do a lot of adjustments to get the correct color?

With your T3i, color adjustments will be unnecessary. All you'll have to do is learn the Custom White Balance function. It amounts to (typing this for other readers; I think you already know) setting up the shot without the coin using actual lighting, on a grey (white has always worked with me for Canon, as well) background, shooting the bare background, and telling the camera "this is what the light looks like." If by chance you *do* wish to adjust color, the Gimp is a free and very powerful solution. The overwhelming majority of adjustments will be in the Yellow channel only, and occasionally a little Red too.

Wow, nice shot. Back in the day, the 18-55 was a junk lens. Looks like you got a really, really good one. Good stuff.

Vanslem6,
If you're referring to the Civil War token, it was shot with a 60mm macro lens.
