Hi all, just wondering if the 1930 penny in general is overpriced or has it dropped dramatically over the past 3-4 years. I have put a link on one that is listed on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/1930-PENNY-...em3cdc34e81e which is a nice coin valued at $25K but I'm pretty sure you can purchase these at the big auction houses for $15k or less. Is the 1930 penny in general overpriced and a bad investment?

Its obvious that it's a 1930 penny. It shows the correct dies that are used in the 1930 penny.

Then Why is it in that basement slab? Ever You have to remember that APCGS was the company that had a MS35 grade not so long back

Im guessing that all relatively new slab companies are called "basement slabbers" until they are more well known. Obviously this APCGS is growing in popularity in Australia by the sheer volume of coins being listed by numerous sellers on ebay which include a good volume of "top end" coins. I haven't used them yet since I do get coins done by PCGS but I am very tempted. Even on there website, there growth over the past 3 years has climbed dramatically which is shown on there front page. But this is getting away from my question which is.. Is the 1930 penny in general overpriced

Yes it is overpriced. A coin graded by PCGS at F12 has a value of $19,500 (Blue sheet)

I have bought many over the years from auction houses between 10k-14k and made a nice amount of money selling them to the public to finance my unique collection. It's obvious to me that the "book" value of this coin is way overpriced by at least 10K. To me, I believe that the 1930 penny real price for a fine should be closer to only 10K maximum. There are plenty of other coins in the world that are much scarcer at a price that is lower than the 1930 .

coinsaus I am the sort of person who you are selling to,cashed up bogans, buying with there self managed super funds. I am 44 and have a few 1930s, 3 now and have set my sights on decimal coins only in the last five years, nothing but decimal and I have a few mates just like me they do not like coins just invest in coins were I like to pick and search,I have seen the market in errors and rare decimals still very strong and I will buy things I have had/ held in my pocket and I never had pre decimals so I think in time the pre market will soften over time and the decimal will power on. This is shown as my kids are now collecting and have no interest in pre decimal

I collect unique items and it now does consist of mainly decimal coins. Collectors today a generally steering towards decimal for a number of reasons: 1: Obviously younger collectors only collect items that they know. the younger generation generally don't know much (if anything) about pre decimal coins including the decimal 1 and 2 cents. They only collect what they know. 2: The mint is doing a good job in interesting people in collection coins by making different designs on coins. 3: If you can collect coins in your change that is somewhat scarce, it is 100% profit when it comes time to sell them.

I agree with trout APCGS is definetely a basement slobber proof of this is on ebay with all the dipped and overgraded coins of theirs being sold secondly APCGS coins are being sold by Peter Wallace which in it self says something on top of all I believe it is run by a coin dealer up on the gold coast. Not a retired one but an ACTIVE ONE. Frankly APCGS is a piece of junk just trying to ride of the coat tails of PCGS the proper and legitimate TPG. APCGS is very very lucky it hasn't received a breach of copyright/trademark letter from PCGS. APCGS is junk. PCGS is GOLD!

wow, all this over a question about a 1930 penny. Quote: APCGS is very very lucky it hasn't received a breach of copyright/trademark letter from PCGS. APCGS is junk. If I'm not mistaken, Copyright/trademark means you can't use it, so if my eyes have all of a sudden missing something, they are completely different. This APCGS company has more chance of taking you to court over slandering and winning than to be worrying over PCGS sending them a breach letter for something that they haven't done. Im Australian and I'm happy to give Australian companies a go, obviously I would use PCGS for my high end items as they are a more established company.

I am suspicious enough to think that there are an increasing enough number of superb quality fakes that are passing expert muster. Besides, I would NEVER buy ANY coin on ebay at that price level. Perhaps more of us are thinking like that. These two factors could be helping to at least stop the price of '30 pennies from rising.

Quote: Then Why is it in that basement slab? Because it would be body bagged by the top tier TPG's.
