Hi all, its been a long time, Got some of the Bug back....After reading Canadians cheap setup......I found the canon 18-55mm IS II for 60 bucks at a local pawn shop.....WHAT a difference........over the IS model..I am shooting a full silver dollar shot at 6 1/4 inches by the way its at 55mm setting...Still up close and personal, and the images are nice....EXCITED as I am with all of this, I found, as I have switched from windows SP to win 7 32 bit, which worked fine with the canon software, but some other programs didn't work so well, so I reloaded to the WIN7 64 bit...In which every things working great.........
UNTIL I reloaded the canon software......must have bin WIN7 32bit.....it hangs freezes, I have to force a shut down.......
So I went to The canon.com (USA) it sensed I have WIN& 64 bit and guided me to the 64 bit upgrades.....I installed them...
I still have the same problem......freezing up ect....
AS for the lens. I love it......It seems the IS 2(II)
is a 16 element in 12 groups as the original IS is 11 (eleven) elements in 9 groups, not readily posted...
INTERESTING enough is reviews are not so good but they remark on how sharp it is....and of course the plastic build....
MY first problem is..how to get the software to work like it did in WIN XP FLAWLESS......
Problem 2, is I have noticed how many can post huge pics while I am trying to get my pics under a pathetical 100K..... but first things first.....How to get the EOS utility which allows me to shoot on computer screen NOT TO FREEZE? any comments....Gene

I also bought a new laptop with Win7 last year after my XP unit went out.Really hated moving out of XP.

I am no expert on this, but there are some things you can try.I had numerous problems with older software, some of which
ran some didn't.The major problem was my older Canon Printer.Took awhile but finally had to manually load some drivers
for it.Really had to work at it to get that done.I discarded the older software that didn't work.

If you have tried any of this or it doesn't really address what you are asking then disregard.

Compatability mode is supposed to enable you to run older software on newer OS.Like running 32bit on 64bit.Does it work?
No clue.I have only read up on it on it after I got the new laptop.Since you have upgraded, you might have to do uninstall and
then reinstall on the software.

What is program compatibility?

Program compatibility is a mode in Windows that lets you run programs written for earlier
versions of Windows. Most programs written for Windows Vista also work in Windows 7,
but some older programs might run poorly or not run at all.

What to try first
If an older program doesn't run correctly, the first, and easiest, thing to try is the
Program Compatibility troubleshooter. It can automatically detect and fix common problems
that prevent older programs from installing or running correctly.

Other things to try
If the troubleshooter isn't able to fix the problem, try the following:

Change the compatibility settings on the program manually. For more information, see Make
older programs run in this version of Windows.

Go online to the Windows 7 Compatibility Center to find out if your program is compatible
with Windows 7 or to look for new programs.

Go online to your computer or software manufacturer's website to check for information
on how to make the program compatible with Windows 7.

Go online to the Microsoft Answers website. In the Forums, you can ask questions or share
information with others who are interested in the same topic.

Notes
Don't use the Program Compatibility troubleshooter on older antivirus programs, disk
utilities, or other system programs, because using outdated programs of this type might
cause data loss or create a security risk.

Some compatibility problems might be caused by drivers. If an older driver is causing
problems, you'll need to update it manually. For more information, see Update drivers:
recommended links.

You can also open the Program Compatibility troubleshooter by right-clicking a program's
icon or shortcut, and then clicking Troubleshoot compatibility.

EOS Utility works flawlessly with Win7/64. I'm using it in that configuration. Sounds here like a scratch reinstall is in order, after a complete removal - use Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs for the uninstall rather than Canon's utility.
