A couple of dings and far from clean, but it's not very worn at all. Very cool coin. Is it worth any more than silver melt value? Thanks!

Depending on where it was minted yes. Pictures of the coin will help to determine an estimate on the coin.

Oops, imade a mistake. That page shows the dates for 1898-1905. I thought there were more mint marks than one but there is only the JQ for that year.

To answer the question in the OP, the coin is worth nothing more than bullion. It is very common in high grade, so no one collects low grade examples, hence no demand.

There is a collector demand, not everyone wants or can afford high grade coins. It's worth about $45 retail. There is a collector for every grade of coin, and Mexico is popular with collectors. When I don't feel like spending $100 on a high grade Peso, I'll spend $40 on one like this if I like it.

The mint is the Culiacan mint, you can tell by the Ca mint mark left of the date. The JQ to the right of the date is the Assayer initials. Mexico had a system at the mints where the Assayer vouched for the coinage silver content throughout the minting process.

There are collectors who just want to get a coin from each mint, about a dozen, some quite scarce, for whatever years are available or a certain year they select. Mo, Mexico City, is the common mint, then in increasing scarcity through the others.

Culiacan is in Sinaloa state on the west coast. Hermosillo, in Sonora to the north, also had a mint. Others are Jalisco, Chihuahua, San Luis Potosi, Guadalajara, Guanuato, Durango, and so forth. Mint marks are, in order, Cn, Ho, Ja, Ca, SP, Ga, Go, Du, and so forth, with lots of variation over the years.

Nice coin. As has already been stated, it's from the Culiacan mint (see the Cn mark between the denomination and the date). The assayer was JO. This coin is circulated and probably only worth melt. You can check if there is much collector interest but looking at completed sales on ebay. I think that $45 retail is a bit high. Around here you can easily get AU or low MS examples for $35-40. Still, it's a nice example and if you're going for one coin from each of the branch mints, it's worth hanging on to.
