I found this at a boot sale last year in a box of old pennys shilling etc.., all the usual crap you'd expect. I think its a copy, as the condition seems too good, but dont really know for sure...any IDEAS ....?

I'd agree. It's too crude to be real.

A 'boot sale' is people selling stuff out of their car trunks.
Like a yard sale, or a lawn or a garage or a tag sale.
But mobile. A flea market on wheels.
(Learned this from Antiques Roadshow on BBC.)

Im not exactly sure what the coin is meant to be,
I think it may suppose to be a Charles 1 Scottish 20 pence from 1650s.
But hey...what the heck... even if it is a copy, I like it and it only cost me £3 along with about 70 other old coins in a box
So I dont think it makes much difference to my collection.
But I'm no expert on Hammereds....so any infor in a bonus.

Now I dont know how he worked it out, but I left it with him for a couple of hours, and when I picked it up he told me it was most definately silver. anyone know how would I be able to check this, does anybody know? I agree Peter123 it is a nice pocket piece.

with a yard sale you know where it came from if there is an issue, but a mobile seller cannot be easily found again. If yo paid a lot, I would be skeptic. But, if it did not cost much ask why would anyone fake it.

See that was my way of thinking too, it only cost me £3 and I got about 80 other old LSD coins with it, so to be honest I'm not really too bothered if its a fake, just wanted your opinions on it...many thanks

My gut feeling its REAL. Send E-Mail attachment photos to Spinks - London isright around the corner from Dublin <BG>. Could be obverse die damage hence the raised lines on the face and its off-center - does not have the fabric of a fake IMO.

I think you have got lucky here. No obvious signs to suggest its a copy, usually modern copies of hammered are blindingly obvious. Not a high value enough piece to warrant a really high quality fake good enough to deceive, and the fact you bought a whole load of coins for £3 suggests the seller simply didn't give them any thought, so it is reasonable they hadn't been sorted. Shame about the scratches on the Obverse as other than that it is in decent shape.

Try checking weight and diameter, not as much help as with milled coins but not a bad start. Around 15 mm and 1.1 grams would be in the right ball park.
