I was looking at some nickel dollars and I was struck (pardon the pun) how much superior the 1977 nickel dollars look in terms of sharpness and luster as compared to previous and even to later years. I did notice the 1977's have a wider rim,but is there any other reason?

Thanks

Arthur

New hubs, new master dies and better technology usually result in better coins.

Maybe you are correct----you must check at least 100 to 200 of the 1977's and see if there is any reason for any differences.---IMHO

Sorry I was not clear, I'm an amateur collector and all are business strikes.
Not sure what new hubs are, but have looked at 40 to fifty 1977's and they all seem to have a "sharper" & a clearer look than earlier years as well as higher luster. Hope this clarifies some of the points raised

Your observations mirror my own Arthur. 1977 was probably the first year this coin was struck by the new presses in Winnipeg. It was strongly struck, which also was probably detrimental to the life of the dies - this is the lowest mintage year also. The thick, raised rims allowed for protection of the coin's struck surfaces. 1977 is one of the easiest years to get a gem MS-65 or MS-66 strike, only 1968 and 1982 Constitution dollars are easier to find in high grades. You can also find some (but not all) 1974 nickel dollar coins with a similar, wide rim.
