This is a 1858 fake 20 cent piece that I bought because of the doubled A----it is very worn, and bought it because I thought it was a struck coin and hence the doubling. But all other indicators point to casting----what do you think-----I think this is a very old counterfeit---will be posting more photos. Coin was indented from the reverse. Could this be a trial piece done by an engraving apprentice on a trial planchet? If it is a fake why was it done so badly? Edited by lambecolin 02/16/2014 12:32 am

I think if it is a 20 cent coin it is 1858, not 1958. Why the heck did you buy it and for how much? Is it even silver? Where did you buy it and before I was showing off my newest counterfeit I would check if it is legal to buy sell trade possess these things. I have a funny habit of throwing them in the garbage. Enjoy.

Re read. Did you buy it thinking it was real? Understanding your dilema more if so.

To bmoney------I bought it because it may have been a failed trial piece that escaped the mint process----stolen from the mint----there are a handful of 1858 trial pieces that are Charlton valued at $ 35,000. So greed set in----but was disappointed when in hand---Weight was one gram shy---therefore a fake. But it is still nice to own this fake because it is so old and so obvious.

Unreal! Quite crudely copied. Contemporary counterfeit likely.

Whats the weight?..I wonder what kind of metal that is. It appears silver in the pics but I'm no expert. It does look crude with heavy wear. hhmmm..

I've never in my life pursued an object because it was stolen. Wow. Almost as bad as that Canadian here who openly uses foreign coins in vending machines.

Actually, the date seems to be 1868 to me.

I had to check that date again----at X90---a badly worn 1858 it turned out to be.
