Last fall I bought the 14-coin silver proof set from the U.S. Mint for $53.95. I just noticed that the Mint has sold out of the set and the set is now selling for as much as 80 or 90 dollars on ebay. What gives? Is the Kennedy half driving the price increase? I saw a couple of 2013 Kennedys broken out of the set selling on ebay for 30 bucks or more, and I understand that the 2012 Kennedy is commanding a pretty nice premium. Or are there other coins in the 2013 set that are driving the price as well?

Due to the unexpected sellout of the 2012 silver proof set, even with the additional 50,000 SE sets, the 2012 proof Kennedy are still the key coins (lowest mintage) in the Kennedy series.

Yes, and I wonder if something similar is going on with the 2013 silver proof set?

This is a hint - keep that set. They're going to be cannibalized for Kennedy's in the future, making the full set scarcer going forward.

The 2013 set is sold out also. Last report had it at 419,148 units, which would make it the second lowest proof Kennedy.

The 2012 S silver proof set contains the key coins for both the Kennedy proof silver half and the Roosie proof silver Dime 395k + 50k so around 445k.
The 2012 silver proof set is selling for between $160-185 and the LE set is now between $230 and $280
The 2013 is not far behind that key set with 419k + 50k (assumed) so around 469k...not much difference
The 2013 silver proof set is now between $75-100...time will tell what the LE set will go for once it sells out. My guess is that it will approach the 2012 set in price and settle just below...

Here we go again. I bought two at $61.95 last year hoping that they would go up. When the price dropped to $53.95 I was bummed. I'm holding out for $125 and then I'm going to sell my extra. Bet that's only a couple months from now. Littleton has them for $96.95, which is actually a decent price right now.

Missed the boat on buying my 2013 SPS from the mint before they sold out. Bought one off of ebay today for 86$. Decided to go for it now just in case the price goes crazy like the 2012. I will deffinitely buying my 2014 sets from the mint as soon as they come out. It is crazy not too. Once they sell out at the mint the premium seems to skyrocket.

I paid $60 or whatever the original issue price was when they first came out last year because of all of the hype of the 2012 set.
Then they dropped the price to $54.95 when silver dropped and I have been kicking myself all year because I didn't really want the set and bought it as an investment and whenever I do that it never seems to work out.
Now I feel a little better knowing the price has gone up.

I need this one for my danscos. Still going to have to pay an arm and a leg for the 2012 sps though. Oh well at least if the 13 sps goes crazy I will already have mine.
