thanks for all your comments. This was an oddball, NGC graded it as UNC details (reverse cleaned). I don't see any signs of hairlines or cleaning on the reverse and it is booming with luster. Maybe they think the black toning is a reaction to a dip of some sorts? Anywho, this coin looks the opposite of cleaned to me; but that was why I was wondering about a dip....since it is already "cleaned" according to NGC.

I would have guessed MS-63 FH. The coin seems okay in the pictures so I am not sure what NGC saw that led to that grade.

Wow, the reverse does not look cleaned to me, not even close. Don't undervalue that coin just because of the designation, its a beaut.

NGC looked at the reverse toning pattern and determined that a failed attempt to remove it had been made. It's a copout because of the chance of some random owner in the future thinking the same thing and filing a grade claim over the coin if it were in a righteous slab. In their defense, I'm not entirely sure they're wrong - this could just as easily be two different sets of toning, the darker, blotchy stuff being the original after an incomplete dip and the lighter stuff having happened in the time since.

Either way, I'm seeing a high eye appeal, market-acceptable coin and if you dip it, I'm coming straight through the Internet after you.
Rest in Peace

lol, dont worry Dave...I dont intend to dip it. I'm a big toning fan in general, I just like to get the CCF'ers riled up every now and then. :-) It's a really beautiful coin, with full not only a fh, but full shield details as well....the strongest detailed type 2 that I own at the moment.
