Hi guys, it's been a while. Just going through some coins and would like to know what grade you would call this half sov going by the photos. Much appreciated.

Cheers guys.
Can you tell me when grading this coin what to look out for with the grade?

Well firstly look at the high points if they show no wear at all then the coin is MS60-70 if there is wear then it is P01-AU58 pending on the scratches or signs of circulation present. The coin above shows wear on St George's Helmet, the dragon and on the obverse on the kings hair. However the scratches are minor remembering that the coin above is magnified many many times from it's original size. A grade of AU55-58 would be expected of this coin. This video should help with understanding the grades and what is and isn't consistent with each. It is very informative. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apn-kYEl-Xw

AU55. TLAR That Looks About Right. There are tiny flat spots above the rider's eye, chest, right leg (two locations,) sword, and dragon wing root. Beard is a bit dull on obverse.

I'm going to say gEF, the main wear points I can see are on the tip of the King's beard and on the rear of the horse. Plus, the King's hair and the riders head look a bit dull as well.

Okay thanks for that. What's the difference between dull and wear? What about What about series specific weaknesses? I have a mate that has some KGV HS that have flat legs on the rider that are quite high grade.

Dull is really a form of wear. A good way that shows up the difference is to compare the reverses two 1910-36 florins, one in gem uncirculated, and the other in good EF.
The difference becomes obvious when you look at sharpness of the feather detail of the emu. The feathers on the gem unc. example look sharp, as if they could cut each other. On the gEF example, the spines on the feathers are rounded. (dull)

Well it will differ from year to year as the coin press pressure was often changed each year mostly to extend die life. Generally weaknesses would be the high points which would be the riders helmet, horses head and the dragons wing joint. On the other side it would be the ear and the hair.

Thank you for the information. I still find it difficult to tell the difference between die wear and circulation wear. All looks the same to me lol. And when I go to buy it's die wear so it gets a better grade and costs me more but when I go to sell it's circulation wear and gets a couple of grades lower. Frustrating.

This was purchased from Klaus Ford a number of years ago as a Choice Unc. When I looked at it recently, to my eyes it looked like an EF or thereabouts so I thought I'd double check on the forum here. I haven't really lost any money on this as gold was cheap back then when I bought it. But I've had the same thing happen with KJC. Buy at one grade, have to sell a couple of grades lower.

I'd say it's possible that the coin could be UNC for all we know. It's very hard to grade coins from photos - to me, it looks gEF, but I could see it in person and think otherwise. The fields look free from digs and markings which are common to sovereigns and the wear might be the result of die wear.
Klaus Ford is a fairly reputable dealer, so I'd say if they said ChUNC, there might be more to this coin.

Looks 58, but best to view it in person.

This is even better. I took it to the local coin dealer and he graded it VF. I think I am starting to see the fascination for PCGS.

It will just be another opinion to be honest.
EDIT: That being said, if you want to sell it, I'd get it graded.
