Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here and a newbie to collecting in general although I've casually searched my change and the registers I've worked behind my whole life for interesting stuff. Recently I decided to pick up some metals for investment/savings reasons and while ordering some silver eagles decided to throw a graded Morgan (random year random mint) on the order for fun because it seemed reasonably priced. Long story short the date I got was an even 100 years before I was born so I thought it would be cool to have a little collection of US coins from that year. So here's where I need help, I can't find a complete list of what coins were minted in that year (1879). I did some searching and found the following: Indian Head penny, Three Cent, nickle, dime, quarter, half dollar and of course the Morgan. Some day I might even like to pick up the gold pieces which I think are a quarter eagle, half eagle, eagle and double. If I am missing anything I'd love to know and if there are any hints for picking any of these up that would be great too. Sorry for the long post!

The Morgan dollar was made at Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Carson City...if you'd like to have one from each mint that struck them. There was also a Gold Dollar and Three Dollar Gold pieces minted that year. The $3 is an odd denomination and kind of pricey. Welcome to the hobby. -MV

Since I'm working on a Seated Liberty dime set currently, I'll reference the 1879 dime - it's one of the keys to the series and costly in any condition.

Here is a pic of the aforementioned Morgan that gave me the idea. I'll put up others as I find them. Sorry for the poor quality I am still getting the hang of macro photography.

Welcome to the hobby and the forum. You have a good list so far, I think the only thing not mentioned so far is the $4 Stella gold. Extremely pricy and I would recommend not worrying about it. There are some pricy coins in there but it will be a gorgeous set.

You may want to look into purchasing a copy of the Red Book by Whitman Publishing. It has a lot of info on all US coins and you should be able to find info on coins from 1879. For example that book lists the 1879 Liberty Head Nickel with a mintage of 25,900.

My initial searches on e bay have shown that after the Penny and the Morgan, the gold might be cheapest! This may take a while....

The mint at the time was so busy minting silver dollars a lot of the other denominations weren't produced as much, hence the difficulty locating a lot else from that year. Good luck!

Thanks Kevro22 I was starting to suspect that. Rookie mistake thinking since the Morgans were so cheap and plentiful that the smaller change would be in that ball park. I have formulated a new plan I will start with close examples for a more reasonable price and work my way towards having all 1879 examples. In other words I will start with what a person might have had in their pocket in 1879 and upgrade from there.
