I'm new at buying ASE and I was told buy quite a few people to just buy ASE that have been graded buy PCGS or NGC. I've been seeing a lot of ASE MS70 on ebay that are graded from ANACS.. What your thoughts on ANACS? I heard they are the oldest grading company, but I know all because there the oldest doesn't mean a thing. Thanks for any info on this.

The ANACS modern 70s have little to no premium.

While they may technically be the oldest by name, theyeve been sold several times and have had entirely new people take it over. PCGS and NGC are really the oldest of those three since the ANACS name keeps getting sold.

A bunch of people are going to chime in saying how dumb modern 70s are, to each their own. If you are going to get 70s stick to PCGS or NGC. Otherwise if you get ANACS ones dont pay more than a slight premium over raw.

basebal21,

Thanks for the concise and helpful summary of the TPGs. I've been collecting coins for around 30 years, and I remember the pre-slab days of certificates with photos glued to them and embossed seals.

I'll chime in and say I won't succumb to the modern MS-70 (I'll add "First Strike") hype. For a little more, gorgeous uncirculated PCGS and NGC Walking Liberty halves are abundantly available. And they don't have a road-kill eagle on the reverse.

Forgot to mention for the ASEs start with the older years first. Most of the early dates youll have to get 69 unless you have a ton of money, but let a year or two pass before getting one unless you get a great deal. The mint has really been dropping the ball with their planchet washing causing milk spots to develop on the newer dates. If you let a little time pass you should be able to avoid most of the ones that will have the problem.

I actually hate that they recycled the design like that. Its a beautiful design but ASEs ruined Walkers for me.

Youre right about the first strike/early release not meaning anything, though they usually do have some really cool label designs that I usually like. Adds to the presentation a bit imo.

Take everything basebal said and reverse it. My opinion is that I wouldn't waste my time or money sending anything to PCGS or NGC unless I had some really compelling reason to. And I doubt that exists. And, both PCGS and NGC have been sold as well. So that argument means little to me.

The premiums paid for the popular plastic are based on hype and really good marketing. If you start looking around you will find example after example of mis graded, mis attributed coins in the God holders. The Dallas Cowboys of TPGs IMO.

I rather like the entire design of the ASE. I see nothing wrong with the rev, and I love the Walking Liberty design scaled up to the one ounce size. I find it to be a great tribute to the original.

PCGS still has some founding members there and NGC hasnt been sold in a while. ANACS was sold in 09 though when they moved and took the ICG graders with them as the new staff.

ANACS is the newest out of the respective current ownership groups of those three even if their name may be older than PCGS since NGC was founded a year later.
