Actually, I know what's going on--but I'm still surprised by the "grade".

Never been circulated, my great great grandfather has kept it in a bottle of HCL since 1888 to preserve it.

Looks like some sort of corrosion. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was a coating of something, paint, varnish or clear coat.

My suspicion is paint, because it's been worn off on some high points.

My guess is it was hermetically sealed in a #2 mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall's porch since noon, 1888

I'd agree with paint or perhaps some gilding or some sort.

I've seen large cents that were coated with something that left them silver in color. Whatever it was would not come off.
