Hello,

I'm new to the forum and do not collect coins but I do not mind finding them while out metal detecting. My latest coin recovery was this 1861 half. It was dropped in December of 1861 given the Civil War camp history. I was wondering if the experts here could take a stab at grading it from the photos provided.

Thanks in advance.

Hard to be precise with the small images. I would say AU-50 to AU-55 details, but it appears to have a lot of scratches, possibly from a harsh cleaning. If so, the value would be below AU value.

Very nice find! I agree with Classic Coin's assessment of AU-Details. The gouges on the reverse make this a 'details' coin.

Pretty darn good shape for being in the ground that long.

Definitely AU details.

Interesting story would be an understatement.

I see a tad of wear on the high points. I'd call it AU55 details.
Your probably looking at XF money.
Great find!
