I read on the chr forum that there are 7 different varieties (correct me if that's the wrong term). I'm wondering what is so special about these or if they are hard to find because I have a lot of them that look different.

That's the year they changed the composition from 95% copper to 95% zinc core with a copper plating midyear, so I believe it's a 50/50 chance of pulling one or another from circulation.
1982 Large date copper,
1982D Large date copper
1982 Small date copper

1982 Large Date zinc
1982D Large Date zinc
1982 Small Date zinc
1982D Small Date zinc

Here's a listing on ebay to give you an idea on the value

The better term would be "Year Variety". Not a die variety as most of us would think of when we hear the term variety. The copper to zinc planchets also figures in as well. Not an error, just a change. A copper planchet on a 1983 would be a wrong planchet error. But not for either of the two for 1982.

I believe I saw some images that showed the large date P as being very thick. I bring this up because I have one that is much thicker than the rest. I can put pictures up shortly unless this is normal.

What's fun about them is that they are still in circulation, and easy to find.

Fuzzy: Do you mind if I add the first image to my educational library? That tells the whole story on the different types?

From a recent CRH pick ($50+), I found around 400 or so 1982 pennies. I sorted them into the various varieties. Here are the results in order of highest to lowest in occurrence.

1982 Large date copper
1982 Large Date zinc
1982 Small Date zinc (found around 30)
1982D Large date copper (found around 20)
1982 Small date copper (found 4)
1982D Large Date zinc (found zero)
1982D Small Date zinc (found zero)

The large date coppers edged the large date zincs, but putting the small date zincs together with the large date zincs, the counts were about even (the 50/50 split noted above). I'm not sure on the exact mintage, but based on my findings, the three to target are the last three on the list. Good luck hunting!

So about the only way to tell the Copper from the Zinc is from the weight?

If so, Anyone have any suggestions about a good inexpensive scale that is reliable to use?

I can hold one of each in different hands and tell the difference.

Dar - a popsicle stick and an old AA battery. Find center of the stick and tape it to the battery on center. Create a seesaw of sorts. Use two known coins to determine if you are on center. I kept a 1960 copper on one end and ran the '82s on the other end. '82 coppers kept things even. Zincs rose up.

DAR, If I am unsure of the composition I drop it on a hard surface. The copper coins will "ring" and the zinc sounds "dull". Hope that helps.

Dar, here is a link to a site that I found very informative in identifying the different varieties of 1982 cents.

http://www.cointalk.com/threads/a-g...ation.55647/

I have built the balance shown on the site and it really works for separating copper form zinc pennies.

I use a cheap $20 Chinese electronic coin selector (ch-268t) I put in a zinc as sample coin and then I feed it a few hundred 1982 coins then it puts the zinc in one bin and the copper in the other. Then I compare the date based on the set I bought from tarnishqueen on ebay same one as fuzzy shows above.
