In 1857, some FE cents were struck using dies left over from 1856, but dated 1857. These are considerably scarcer than the normal type for 1857. Rather than me buy this coin to re-sell, I'm just going to post the link below. The price is pretty good for this variety in VF-- here's your chance to get one! Here are some diagnostic pictures using the ebay coin. The serifs are notably more flared on the Type of 1856 for the F in "OF". The inside serifs on both the E and F run into the top stroke of the letters on the 1856 type (arrows). Of course, don't take my word on the attribution--here are some of the markers on less worn examples. Get it before anyone notices--good luck! Edited by DVCollector 02/22/2014 3:17 pm

Yeah--but you would probably pay 2-3X. Most cherrypicks on ebay aren't slabbed.

Well..this thread isn't about the merits/value of slabbing--it's my way of sharing my cherrypicking with other collectors. Besides, if you know what 'problem-free' looks like, and it doesn't make the grade--you have 14 days to return it. I'm just reading that auction--I'm not offering guarantees--attribute and grade it yourself.

Raymo--I see the markers. Too bad about the ding, but it's still a collectable coin.

Would the rub/abrasions on the reverse get it a details grade?

Thanks DV, I offered the guy ten bucks and got it. * that was a few months ago when somebody posted here about the 57 with 56 obverse. I went through every 57 on ebay and found this one unattributed. It was a cheap way to get one.

Quote: Would the rub/abrasions on the reverse get it a details grade? I see that--and I would have to examine it in person to know for sure. But if it's not obvious already, I enjoy finding varieties without worrying if they slab. Quote:I went through every 57 on ebay and found this one unattributed. It was a cheap way to get one. Good eye! I know of 4 others right now on ebay. If anyone wants the links, PM me.

As promised here is the coin that DVC linked to. Offered the seller a bit less than his asking and got it. I had some concerns about an abrasion on the reverse from the seller's photos, but in hand I don't even see it at all so I think it would grade ok. The coin is darker in hand (more like the seller's photos on ebay, mine make it look cleaned I think). I just figured out some things with my camera and lighting, but it was after I took these. Thoughts on grade? F-15? Thanks to DVCollector for sharing this with us!javascript:insertsmilie(' ')
