This one has me stumped.....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/291086956520

I took a look through what the mint produced in that date range and there is nothing that even remotely matches this planchet.

When you look at the planchet, which is kind of an odd composition for a coin and is a bit ugly, it is hard to imagine that the planchet was ever designed to be coin.

So while it looks like a back door job like the seller says, the planchet must have taken a bit of work to design and fabricate.

Anyone have any thoughts on this one? Anyone seen anything like it?

The RCM continues to have the most lax security of any mint in the world. I wonder if the demise of the NBU coins will finally put an end to this.

@SPP, you should have added a couple of 0's to the price (seriously). If double struck dollars can sell for 4 figures, why not this?

That coin won't last long. Nice to see it while we can though!

@DBM, unlike the masses on ebay who think a die chip dot is a $100 error, I believe in pricing errors at fair market value. Frankly, errors are about eye-appeal and this one has an ugly ducking look to it. It also has minor corrosion, being so iron-rich. I am an error collector myself, and I honestly don't think this coin is worth much more than $500.

Trust me, if it was a pristine condition coin, it would have gone to PCGS and then to a Heritage Auction, and probably a 4-figure hammer...
