Columbian exposition half-dollar --------------------------------------------- I've been thinking about this coin for a couple of weeks on and off. Found this on ebay, it's hard to size up! The website commem.com says for the 1893 variety (over 1.5 million) you should pay on average $48 for the UNC and about $20 for the AUNC. The photo below (it's a link to ebay) shows the coin - I believe it to be an AUNC by the photo which would make it slightly over-priced. however, I really cannot say for sure. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....photohostingI need help in grading this coin. Is it worth it, do you think? Thanks, Matt Edited by NumisMattyUk 07/15/2007 02:16 am

I saw something earlier, yes...
However I'm trying to find a bright one for long-term holding as part of my collection...

I see way too much wear on the jaw to call it better than EF. In my opinion, pass this one by.

Definitely not a bargain at that price. I've seen many better examples on U.S. ebay listings at half the price. Have you checked the U.S. listings?

How many people besides me have TwoKopeiki's coin on their watchlist? As a buyer I hate to see this much competition.

I was able to enlarge the pics some, but they're still not great. I think this coin is an EF40. I don't see it going any higher than that.

SuperDave, I love it! I'm going to put that on my watch list.
NusmisMatti, let me know if you plan on bidding on the one SuperDave listed. If you do I'll stay out of it. :)

USAP, I think it's Roman's coin that is listed, and as far as I can tell, there are quite a few of US that are watching it.... trdhrder, you are correct, as a buyer it does stink to know about competition. But look at it this way, if you didn't know the buyer, you'd have no idea how many people were watching the coin. At least now, you know of at least 5. I don't think Roman minds one bit. Although I think he should have definitely listed this one here in our forum instead of ebay. I can't blame him though. He may have gotten a small premium from one of us, but the ebay premium on a toned coin in good shape is unlimited!!!!

NumisMattyUk, That is a so-called dollar(not really a dollar, just a type of medal) issued for the 1892-3 Columbian Exposition in Chicago along with many others. This particular one is HK-155 and was sold as a souvenir at the US Mint exhibit. http://www.so-calleddollars.com/Eve...an_Expo.html
