There are many ... many steps to spotting a fake coin. I will give you what I consider the first two.
1.) If the deal was too good to be true, be very suspicious ...... very. It always boggles my mind how some people intensely question why " This costs so much less than this? " But on other, sometimes more expensive things, they think that they are great shoppers and deal makers and don't stop to ask WHY?
2.) Always ... always check the cert # on any coin you are buying to make sure that the coin in the holder, is the coin that is described. Best case, the coin pictured is the coin in the slab. It is such an easy thing to do, but you would be surprised how many buyers get taken without ever taking this step.

The font used on the PCGS slab is a dead give away, to those of us that have handled a lot of slabbed coins, I doubt this would fool many dealers or knowledgable collectors, but to those new collectors it is indeed a dangerous game of fake and trickery, those contributing to this act of counterfeiting should be hanged till death - to quote an old pre US federal era saying!

Quote: A lot of the fake slabs/coins check out correctly. .........which is why that should only be step 2 of many ....... many steps. First, know how to become suspicious, then eliminate the easy steps. Nothing worse than carting a coin around town and around the 'net, to experts, wasting two weeks of time, when quick look up of the cert would have told you, fake coin, fake holder, in five minutes. Identifying good fakes is a process. If your car doesn't start, you don't tear into the engine looking for bad cylinders, when it could just be a bad battery connection.

As a newish collector this stuff scares the heck out of me. A lot of times with the fakes, the slab #s verify, but the the fake coins themselves are too good for an amateur to detect. Recently I'm liking NGC's certification verification which has actual photos of the coins in the holders. yingyang, thanks for making me nervous.....will help me do my homework better.
