I know in Canada this find would not be taxable because it literally is "found money" but in the States won't the IRS want a share of it?

I believe you're right lyradnoj. Windfalls aren't taxed in Canada, but the same can't be said for the States. I don't know what the tax rates are, but they'll still take home a nice paycheck at the end of the day.

Oh wow , they must be thrilled with their find I felt slightly nervous when I read the bit about some of the coins being loaned out to be money show ...I guess its to do with reading many stories in the Numismatic crime section

I was happy when I found my first penny with my metal detector (which I no longer have). I think I have to walk my dog more often now.
