A friend of mine has a 1999 State Quarter from Connecticut struck on the gold dollar blank. Has anyone seen this error and any idea as to what it is worth? The coin is in AU condition. I'll try to get some pics of it up later today.

Thanks and have a good one.

Hmmm... Highly unlikely I would think. Dollar planchet is bigger than a quarter and shouldn't fit in the chamber. But I could be wrong of course.

I'm wrong, it's possible. Here's a mule....

Bobby your example is not the same as the described coin.(in my opinion the coin you have pictured is a contrived error )

notice your coin has the right reverse and the wrong obverse ,, that means that the blank was in the right place but the wrong die was used for the obverse .

Its possible that a Blank Dollar coin planchet will fit the retaining ring for the SQ's since they would be slightly smaller before being struck ,, I'm not sure about that but its possible!

The biggest problem I have is the 1999 date and the 2000 beginning date of the Golden Dollars ?

we need pics of this coin as well as an accurate weight if the coin has not already been authenticated .

Could be, there's about 10 known to exist. Here's one on Heritage.

Its just my opinion that the coins are a contrived error ,,simply because it would take a real brain to mount the wrong die by accident .

I wonder if Lonnie's friend's coin is actually a gold-plated State Quarter of the type sold to people who don't know any better and think they are buying a true "collector's piece" when they get one coated in gold?

Is there any way you can get the coin weighed? On a Sac blank, it should weigh 8.1gm instead of the 5.7gm a State Quarter would weigh. Given that it's struck from a planchet which starts 2mm greater in diameter than a quarter planchet, I should also expect it to be a bit thicker than a regular quarter.

Authenticated, I expect it would be worth a pretty penny. So to speak.

Forgot to mention. My friend's wife works at a gas station and found the quarter when she cracked open a roll of quarters when she needed change. I think I am going to take it to a local dealer to see what he thinks. My first thought was that the coin was plated. However, I am really not sure. The coin is circulated, which, if someone bought the coin in BU, I have no idea why they would have spent it. Any store, etc. I am sure would have questioned it if someone had tried to spend it.

Neat coin anyway. Let you all know when I get it checked out in the next week or two.
By the way CHRSB, told my firend about your offer, and since this IS a family oriented forum, I absolutely cannot repeat what he said!

Thanks everyone!!

gold plated sh quarter nothing more. look at the rim it is perfect. if it was a mule the rim would be larger than the 1/4 or you would see more rim between the bust and the rim. plus it is reeded where a mule has no reeds and I don't think a Sac plainchant will fit in a quarter die. and as stated before 1999 1/4 on a 2000 plainchant. not happening lol.
Chris my Dad owns and runs a plating shop let me know I can get you all the gold plated coins you can deal with. but you have to send them to me. I wont waist my money on plated anything. lol
