I'm trying to assess the value of the 1890 Snow-1--does anyone have the writeup for this variety? Thanks!

Quadrupled DDO. Two small nubs inside top of the "0". Stage B has heavy die erosion below date. Shield points and olive leaf not touching.

Information concerning the value of this variety -3 stars -scarce variety with only a few MS pieces known (65RD,64RB,64RB,64RB,64BN) CherryPickers Guide gives it a premium of 10x($500) in MS60, 12x($1200)in MS63, and 4x($2500)in MS65 over a non variety.

value will depend a lot on condition, and whether it is slabbed with the attribution or not.

Thanks for all the info--very helpful! Mine, alas is not MS. I have yet to cherrypick any variety in MS, but that gives me a better idea.

CherryPickers Guide for circulated grades: VF20-$100, EF40-$250, AU50-$350. I have never compared the price in this guide to actual completed sales so I don't know how accurate it is, but at least it gives you a rough idea.

I forgot I have a Cherrypicker's Guide from 1994--yep, that's what's in my book. An AU-58 (PCGS) sold on April 2013 for $558--so those numbers don't seem far off. Of course, I've never cherrypicked anything in higher grades like that--yet. You're right--that's what Rick Snow calls it.

I just googled 1890 Snow 1 and this topic came up. I just cherry picked an AU58+ example for $20. I'm pretty stoked.

RedRaider--really good pickup! In high AU, that's a $500 coin--but you know that already. Any pictures? I always like looking at this variety.

Here are some pics of the one I picked today. I grade it as an AU58, but TPGs are more lenient to rare varieties sometimes. With a trace of red on the reverse, it might go MS. I needed this coin too!

The markers are very obvious--that's a really nice example too, congrats!

Thanks!! I went to a coin shop in Raleigh this morning to pick up an 1867/67 MS63BN NGC, and while I was there I found this. The price on the 1867/67 was fair, but after finding this gem in the rough, it ended up being a really good day.
I also cherry-picked an 1869 Snow-1 in MS64RB this week. Less than 10 examples of that coin have been traced, with mine being tied for the finest known.

WOW!! I'd call that a great week for cherrypicking! With your luck, you might even find a 1888/7 S-1.
