I bought the 2 oz silver Tim Barnard coin after it had been in "waiting for stock" status. When I bought it, the website indicated that the coin was 85% sold out. I just got my coin and the serial number is 2894/5000. Does this mean that the coin was returned to them? Also, would the mint have made the 5,000 already? The don't sell out on every coin, so I can't imagine them doing so.

Paper piece of COA with numbers randomly inserted to the coin cases (I think). So the serial number not really related to the minting sequence.
The second - I do not think, that mint minting all the mintage (in this case 5.000 as single bulk), but does it according to demand.
Also I do think, that in some cases, specific COA numbers "taken aside". So assuming, that for this coin you will not receive in random distribution the COA equal Tim Barnard's year of birth.

I was hoping I would get a really high number like 4500 or above since its status went back to "waiting for stock" and sometimes when the website reads that, that coin is not ever up for sale again.

Received mine from the RCM two weeks ago. The COA # was very close to 4500. There is no correlation to order of minting the coins in any way.

As a dealer we buy cases of stock from the mint. Upon opening a box you can find certification numbers from all over the spectrum.

So, its pretty much luck of the draw.

Quote: So, its pretty much luck of the draw. I wouldn't say that exactly. Possibly when you buy directly from the mint it would be luck of the draw, but it's very likely that at least some dealers cherry pick desirable COA #s to sell at a premium. For some reason, some people attribute added value to certain numbers (and even reduced value to other numbers).

It's random and the luck of the draw. I ordered 3 dino coins and the serial numbers were in numerical order.
