I'll be on the lookout for a 96 o for ya. although I'm sure you regularly check the same sources probably.(heritage, ebay, dlrc, and collectors corner) Do you have the 96 s already? it seems just as elusive as the 96 o to me if not a little more. Do you have any dates you dislike? I'm not a fan of the 1913 s, it's price seems to be based much more on the mintage number and hype than the actual scarcity of it. For some reason I like the 1894 and 1894 o. not sure why but I do. I have a favorite mint too, new Orleans. The weak strikes makes things interesting and I like how its from a closed mint pretty far away from me. Lots of interesting history there. A lot of people don't even know it ever existed in my experience.

The 1894-O is difficult to find, but the 1894 is also difficult. Surprisingly so. I picked up a nice VF years ago for $40. Price has since risen. The 1913-S is more hype than substance. It was saved early on. Hold out for a nice one. All three 1896 are tough to find. As a kid I was fascinated by the New Orleans' coins. Also cool was seeing the same year with four different mints. Years ago a story is told how the Ford Motor Company offered a new car to anyone who could find coins that would spell "FORD." Impossible to do.
PATIENCE, Justin, and over time you will be rewarded.

Justin, To put your 1913-S quandary to rest, Take a look at this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1913-S-BARB...em3cdd88a03d Better than many others on ebay. Lovely rims. could make VG upon examination. Put a max bid on it and forget until the last hour of the auction. Ends the night of March 15. As Newspeak would say, Double ++ Good, (1984 the book and movie)

Justin new orleans is by far my favorite mint. The history of it being a confederate mint for a time just cant be beat. The o looks great too and I always favor the mints no longer around since to me it adds a little extra to the interesting aspect of it.
Im not actually doing a full series of these, mostly looking for one great one for my 1800s type set but ill probably end up getting most of the 1800 o mints at some point. Come to think of it I might actually do an s and p mint too to have one of those.
I get bored (for lack of a better term) with doing a complete set of things. Theres so many different things I want all the time I never finished any complete set I tried so I stopped trying lol. I do have an au 58 1909 o I think I'm going to sell. I like it but I dont love it. If I dont love something I usually end up putting it towards something I do.
I really like the 94-98 o mints. Those are the ones I check the most often. The post 1900 p mints I'm not a big fan of. You generally have to spend a lot to get ones that are separated from the pack. The late date p mints are my least favorite by far. If you look at the population reports from like pcgs theres almost as many graded for those couple dates as there are for the rest of the series combined.
I also really want the 96 o since I already have that half. If I can get that dime and quarter I think it would be cool to have the full set from that year.

I want to do a type set someday. Probably not a full one but some of them. I like the obsolete denominations too. If I had the money gold $1 and $3 would be a lot of fun imo. Barber dimes are what I'm most comfortable with. my original plan was to complete the set and then go on to mercs and rosies and then work my way back and get as much of a complete dime set as I could. Now I think id rather just maximize my Barber dime collection as much as possible. a ms 65 including keys is out of my range, it was over 100k before I even hit 1900 when I did the math. taking out the 1894 o and 1895 o takes out a good chunk of it though so I might be able to get close if I go for lower ms grades for them and a few others. That's assuming I can find the coins. lol. I figure I've got another 30 years left in me so it's going to be close probably.

That's a decent 1913 s matthew, thanks for the link. Right now I'm in saving mode though. honestly I think the 1913 s might be one of the final few I need to complete the set because I want an ms one but I don't really like the 1913 s date like we talked about so I don't want to spend the money on it. I will bite the bullet eventually. thank you for all the help you've provided. if not for you my love for Barber dimes may of never really taken hold on me as it has. While I'm on thank you's, thank you for participating in my thread baseball and meadowview, I've enjoyed it immensely and will continue to do so. (up)

This 1895 o is pretty sweet. do you think it would cac? It looks like a pretty nice strike besides a few of the kernels on the corn. Do you think a cac sticker would add a premium to it? the difference seems to be about 1200 between a 40 and a 50 from what I see. http://www.collectorscorner.com/Pro...?id=15399444

"Champagne taste, beer pocketbook." Yes, sweet, but being color blind I miss the colors. Is Collector's Corner a decent site in general? It is brand new to me. I saw nothing wrong with the kernels and the overall strike is sharp. You are gonna have to save up for a long time to come to get one. All I did, Justin, was to encourage and guide you. You are excused from final exams and will get an A+ for the course. Gosh darn dimes are addicting.

Justin I would be shocked if CAC hasnt seen the coin already. Any dealer that sells a lot of CAC stuff will almost certainly send every 4 figure coin they get in to them. For what its worth CACs population report shows o 2 AU 50s stickered for the 1895 o and only 3 AUs total. Only 8 of the MS ones have stickered too. A sticker would add a nice premium to that coin. I agree even without the sticker its still a nice one though. If I had to guess I would bet that scare the cheek kept it from stickering but it actually doesn't bother me on that one. Im not doing the full type either right. At the moment I'm doing the 1800s one on the PCGS registry set where its the full demoninations and majority varieties from then with no gold. I'm really enjoying it currently. The more I get into it the nicer I want it to be and have kind of put everything else on hold to make it as nice as possible like you want to do with the barbers. http://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/Com....aspx?c=3709Thats the one I've been working on. I'm sure you can figure out which one is mine lol

collectors corner is a nice site. it's basically a collection of various dealers listings. dlrc uses it. However I have never bought through the collectors corner site and can't comment on that part of the site just the listings aspect.

Has anyone ever tried the buy/sell/trade on the pcgs forums? I have been thinking about once I get the money saved to see what else is out there but at the same time I'm kind of nervous about someone trying to rip me off or something. Some of the people on that site don't seem to have the highest morals imo.

What do you guys think of proof Barber dimes? I've been looking just for fun and I have to say I'm actually kind of disappointed on most. the strikes don't seem to be as nice as id expect for a proof. did they like cut corners or something? I had considered eventually doing a proof set. minus 1894 s of course, I consider it a special striking and not part of the proof set.(or business strikes set for that matter, I've seen some people including a few that have owned one on the pcgs board say they consider it closer to a business strike than proof)im not so sure now. maybe just the 1892,1894, and 1895 or something like that.

I enjoy watching the conversation between you and basebal about Barber dimes.. I try to chime in if I think I have something to contribute otherwise I just read the posts. I seem to recall reading that the Mint did get sloppy with proof coins. I am thinking it was the late 1890s to the early 1900s that were lacking cameo contrast, but could be wrong. -MV

Looks like a coin that was dipped or wipped at some point and the reactions causing the colors to me. I do really like the obverse those few spots in the middle on the reverse kill it for me.
