hello everyone, I hope all is well.
I am preparing to make my first major coin purchase in about a month and since the coin I really wanted got away
http://www.ebay.com/itm/35098507544...RK:MEBIDX:IT
at a price I would of jumped on in a heartbeat if I had the money(I was going to try to get it for $500 and probably would of went a little higher) so I was wondering what you guys think of this coin http://www.ebay.com/itm/14117970614...RK:MEBIDX:IT
To me it looks more like a vf30 than a xf 40 but I wanted to know what you guys think. Am I just being too conservative with it? David lawrences book says it's a year with good strikes for an o mint issue.
Thanks for the help guys. this will be my first big coin purchase.

I moved your thread to the grading section at your request. Luckily, I was still online to see your email, but the preferred method is to use the Send note to staff link on the right side of any post. This places a note for any moderator to see and take action.

Justin,
Never be troubled by conservatism in grading. It avoids many mistakes.
"A decent strike for an 0-mint." DL did not say 'good strike." Since New Orleans Barber coins
were routinely badly struck, "decent" is a relative term.
I would like to see a bit more hair over the forehead.

I was about to try and get the DL one too. Should have pulled the trigger sooner.

The coast coin one isn't as nice but still looks like an XF. Some of the detail is getting washed out from the different colors in the picture, I would bet theres just a touch or no rub on the liberty in hand.

Did you get that one?

Not yet. I'm at $360 in my coin fund. I'm still not 100% about the coincoast one. it's nice but it kind of feels like I'm settling. I kind of want my first big purchase to be something I fall in love with. the dl one I was falling hard for. if I had seen it was so cheap I could of moved some things around and got the other $90. I'm thinking I might just try to get up a bit higher(700-900 range, maybe 1000) and go for something better but the au 55 1897 o from coin coast looks overdipped and I cant find anything else that I will be able to afford within the next few months. do you know anywhere other than heritage and ebay and collectorscorner that's good for Barber dimes?

The dl one was definitely the better of the two. I'm surprised they accepted so low on the best offer. I would have jumped on that at that price too. The coat coin one I would bet wouldnt get a cac sticker. Usually their coins like that have been sent in already.

The barbers are getting scare for nice ones in the tough dates. Are you set on a 97 o? You can check out collectors corner and see what the dealers there have but its not the easiest to find. You might just have to be patient with that one.

not completely, their are some other ones out of the list I still need that I would like to knock out.( the dates I need still are 1892 s,1893 o, 1895, 1895 s, 1895 o, 1896 o, 1896 s, 1897 o, 1897 s, 1901 o, 1901 s, 1903 s, 1904 s, 1905 o, 1905 micro o, 1907 d, 1908 o, 1909 s, 1910 s, and 1913 s.) I don't consider the 1893/2 as a coin needed for a complete set so its not included for that reason. the other dates id like to knock out are 1892 s, 1895, 1896 o, 1896 s. kind of leaning towards 1895 if I can find one like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/27138797676...RK:MEBIDX:IT I am going to try to contact him and find out what he plans on doing with it I think but I doubt it will still be around in a month to 6 weeks, he seems to want to get rid of it asap as he only listed it for a day or so.
Patience is getting easier for me thankfully, as like you said I've noticed that some dates do seem pretty hard to find.

The 1893/2 is a variety and I personally never include them in my biz strike sets. It's up to you though. The micro O..I would include.

I dont think either is necessary, but I like stuff like that a lot so I probably would. At the very least Id probably try and do the micro o for my 1905 one but I wouldnt say you had any holes if you left those two out.

The 1893/2 would be a very difficult one to find though. PCGS has only graded 40 of those in all grades combined.

Skip on the 96 0 for a while, I've been waiting over 5 months for a nice one priced reasonable to pop up . Theyre basically always priced at least one level up like vfs being sold for xf prices ect. They never really sell because theyre all priced so high but then everyone else does it and you end up just staring at ones you could live with but would never pay that much for.

Honestly though instead of picking a couple dates youd like to do I would just break down the dates into whats plentiful and whats not. If any of the hard/harder dates popped up that you like where you dont see many listings for Id go for that. Who knows when another one you like will come around.

Take a look at the PCGS population report for Barber dimes. Theres quite a few with not to many more than a 100 graded in all graded combined. You can probably go ahead and eliminate 20 or 30 from that population off the bat from how expensive they would be then another 20 30 from being a really low grade which wouldnt seem to fit with what youve been linking. So youre probably talking about maybe 30 40 coins that could potentially be ones you like in the right range and its just not many options out there that dont get sold a whole lot. Even if you include the NGC ones thats still likely under 100 possible ones before you even start weeding out the ones that dont have the eye appeal that you want.

A 'complete' set of Barber dimes does not include the '93 over '92 nor the '05-0 micro 'O'.
I am slowly acquiring these and other anomalies as these dimes are my specialty.
You need not do so.
And YES! These dimes are difficult to find at times.

Edited since I overlooked the obvious--the ebay sale ended after the Collector's Corner update. I should have paid closer attention.

I saw it was still on collectors corner still right after I noticed it sold on ebay the other day. I was hoping against hope they still had it maybe but when I saw it was also gone on their online store I figured it must of been sold. I was SOOOOOOO close! That's what I get for falling in love with a coin I couldn't quite afford yet I suppose. if only I had seen he lowered his price so much before it sold! I would of bought it in a heartbeat. I'm not sure but I don't think that was a best offer price he accepted, I think he put it on sale. right after I saw that he had lowered the price on that I checked his other auctions and he had like 5 other Barber dimes on sale for 10-30 percent off. none of them were something I was interested in unfortunately though.

this is the 1897 o au 55 I was talking about a while back. to me it looks kind of overdipped and unnatural, do you guys concur or do you like it?

How much of a premium does a cac sticker usually add? that coin davidlawrence had didn't seem to be going for much of a premium because of it. about $20 for it on collectors universe and I have seen a few others where the cac sticker didn't seem to matter pricewise very much either.(he wanted more on ebay. to cover fees I assume though.)I wonder if he knocked it down even more on his website than the large chunk he did on ebay. which I probably shouldn't do as I'll drive myself mad
