Someone on this forum got me addicted to 3 cent nickles!! Grrr!!

I just bought this coin at a coin show here in Palm Beach, FL.

1882-3CN---Overdate?

The vendor said it was a 1882 overdate, but I cannot find out any information about it. There are no entries in the CherryPicker's guide for this date. The 2 is clearly on something, and is mounded up when seen. But I cannot figure out what it can be.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this coin?

Thanks!

The Cherrypicker's Guide tends to be very incomplete on all the different varieties out there, so just because this possible overdate isn't in there doesn't mean a lot. I don't have any of my reference materials with me right now...will look later.

Maybe someone else will have responded by then with good info for you.

best wishes

Looks like ALL the 1882 3CN that I found exhibit the same date problem.

It's not an overdate, it's just a "thick 2". Actually, that diagnostic and a couple of others (like date position) help determine if it's a true business strike.
