Picked this up this weekend. Most attractive flying eagle I have ever seen in person so I had to have it. Still has pretty decent luster as well. Thoughts on grade? Opinions? The only thing I don't like is the strike on the reverse. The right side of the wreath at 3 o'clock looks weak, or maybe their was grease in the die?

Holy smokes, that is a nice coin. I don't blame you in buying this. I'm not sure if that is wear as the rim beads look strong. Would like to hear other opinions on this.

Nice looking coin. From what I can see the reverse at 3 o'clock bothers me also. Everything else says AU-55 (maybe -58) to me. But I probably would have passed on the coin.
I try to go into each purchase with the thought that this is "the coin" for the rest of my life. In other words: -- I don't anticipate ever doing an upgrade -- I don't want to ever say "I wish I hadn't bought it".

As a counterpoint to kanga (every opinion is valid), I'm going over the AU55 money this one probably deserves to put it into my collection. It's one of the finest obverses I've ever seen on a circulated FE, and the strike is tremendous on both faces. I think grease was involved on the reverse.
This is The Coin for a 7070.

I like this coin and would put in my collection in a heartbeat. I love the toning and would not be too concerned about the reverse. Poor strikes are inherent in many FE and I agree that it may have been a Grease Filled Die. I do see some minor wear on the eagle's breast. I think that coin would easily grade AU 55 and maybe even 58. Again, that is a beautiful coin.

Great looking coin. AU 55-58. Beautiful toning and over-all appearance.

My first thought was AU58 as well.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I bought it thinking it was AU 56.5 (ha). I think AU55 is likely with maybe a bump to 58 due to luster and eye appeal. As SuperDave alluded to I did go over AU55 money to get it, but I wasn't sure if I would ever see another one quite like it.

Beautiful coin! Given the depth of strike on the eagle (esp. the tail), is this possibly a circulated proof? It's 55 or thereabouts.

That is an interesting thought DVCollector. I don't know how to begin verifying that. I did look at the coins pictured on PCGS photo grade and none have tail struck quite that well, particularly at the base. I would love for that theory to be correct.

I think the right way to confirm (or dismiss) your coin would be by proof die pair markers. Sadly, I don't have the Snow attribution guides for the FE series, but doing some digging here shows there were 4 proof SL die pairs. Additionally, I've headed over to Heritage to study details between proof and MS for this series. Here's a writeup that I noticed on a particular coin. I also notice that your coin has a rather blocked-up last A in "AMERICA". Does it have the other details or rotation? The picture below is of a PR-65, Snow-PR2 obverse. Quote: Snow-PR2, Snow-PT9. A pair of small raised diagonal die lines crosses through the bottom serif of the 1 in the date and thence to the denticles below. The last A in AMERICA is nearly filled in. On the reverse a tiny diagonal die line appears in the denticles below the right end of the ribbon. The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees clockwise with respect to the obverse. Not that I'm saying your coin is de-facto proof, but it gets more interesting as I look further. I enjoy research, and I think this will be today's project--I will post more info as I find it.

You only have to worry about PR2, 3 and 4, DVCollector - this is a Low Leaves type. 1858's can come pretty strongly-struck, and I don't see the Mint releasing a Greaser Proof into the wild.
