Hello, I'm new to the forum. A few days ago I bought a Probus coin but wonder if it's fake coin. Letters of the obverse bother me a bit. It's silvered coin.Relief of the coin is very good but it is not cleaned.

Hi Panjabi,

Your coin is definitely genuine.

It is a Probus from Cyzicus mint

Probus
Obverse:Radiate bust left in imperial mantle, holding sceptre surmounted by eagle.
Legend: IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
Reverse: Sol in spread quadriga.
Legend: SOLI INVICTO / C M
Exergue: XXIV
Mint: Cyzicus
RIC 911

This is one of the commonest Probus coins.

Hope this helps,
regards,
Victorioso

I agree, the coin is genuine. It could use a little cleaning to bring out the details. You can soak it in either distilled water or olive oil for a time which will remove most of the remaining deposits.

Hi, I'll put it in olive oil, but for how long before I can try to clean this coin with toothbrush.

I would used distilled water, leave it a day and rub with a toothbrush VERY CAREFULLY you want to preserve any remaining silvering. Use high magnification if you have it.

Certainly genuine. I can agree with the rating of comon too though there are one or two variants of RIC 911 that are scarcer than others. I have more than 20 different variants of RIC 911.

This coin comes from the third issue and dates to A.D. 280 (Pink dating).

Here is one of mine of the same issue and workshop.

Since your coin is legible, I do not see any need to clean it.

I'm guessing your "photos" are scans so even then we do not get to really appreciate how your coin really looks.
Probably far better than the scans show.

Overcleaned "culls" are not desirable, it would be awful if this was to happen to this coin.

KEEP THE PATINA!

it's fine to gently brush and gently pick at dirt however. if you don't clean it, that would be fine also...what ever works for you.

but..

I wouldn't clean it with anything more than some de-ionized water and a wash-cloth. I'd be afraid that a toothbrush would remove any remaining silvering.
