Poll Question
This is an ebay listing for a high grade rare variety that includes just one, rather fuzzy picture, showing the obverse of the coin in a PCGS holder with the certification details. Auction starts at about $1800US which is roughly 25% of list. Information from the below conversation has been removed because I'm not creating this poll to target the seller or imply there is any wrong doing or anything like that. Please don't try to go out and find the specific listing/seller. I'm just curious as to whether you, as a buyer, would bid on an auction like this? Thanks! Dear l300e, Hello Thank you for the thought but there are three reason why I did not do that. 1. It is PCGS certified hence all is there. 2. I am a 100% ebay dealer and have never had a problem and never will as I will take care of any problems whatsoever. and the third and best reason is I don't have the means to take closeups. thanks xxxxxx Dear xxxxxx, You may want to include a picture of the reverse of the coin and some close ups that show the xxxxxx and the xxxxxx [xxxxxx represents the details of the rare variety that would serve to identify the listing so have been removed]. For this kind of money people want to be sure what they're getting. :-) L. - l300e

I think I was looking at that same coin earlier this morning. There'll be a lot bids, including mine, reverse pic or not. The obverse pic is clear enough to see PCGS did not make an error on that side. The PCGS cert# checks out, and the seller is located near enough to take personal action if there's a problem, thus I voted for the third option.

personally I think the seller took more effort to answer the question then it would've taken to take a decent picture.
I would have a hard time spending $1800+ on ANY coin, let alone one based on a single fuzzy picture.

For that $ amount and the seller response I would not bid if the seller is too lazy to take good pictures. I've had other sellers go out of their way to take more pictures and post them to me on coins worth considerably less.

Fewer bidders = better odds, I'm kinda hoping no reverse is posted for the one I'm looking at.

No. Especially with only fuzzy pictures. The age of buying sight-unseen from dealers on ebay you've never dealt with before is over (of course, for me, it never really began, but more and more people are coming to recognize this). With all the fake slabs around, anyone who puts blind faith in the slab and just accepts a coin dealer saying "it's in a slab, silly" is a fool for whom the imminent parting of their money is inevitable.

Of course, for you, I'm assuming the question is moot. Given the paranoia most ebay sellers exhibit these days, they've probably blocked you from bidding on any of their auctions for your impertinence in actually asking a question.

Depends on the PCGS holder. A newer Shield three-prong holder would sway my decision more than an older style rattler...

Never. What have you got to hide? Even if you don't have a good digital camera a flatbed scanner will provide decent pictures.

While I understand the point of this thread, without seeing what you are trying to point out, blurry picture or not....what's the use without the link? :)

I'm more curious about the general attitude that people have towards this type of situation. What proportion will take a chance vs play it safe? Stick firmly to the principle of "buy the coin not the holder" or make it more a matter of judgement on a case by case basis? etc? I didn't want to muddy the waters by having it turn into a debate on a specific coin/seller/listing.

Well, the way that you have made it sound is that it is a rarity that doesn't come up very often and so might entice people to bid on that alone. That being said, you need to evaluate eye appeal on a coin and it is pretty tough to do with a blurry picture of only one side of the coin. Unless this is a rarity that only comes up once every few years I would pass and wait for something that I could evaluate the eye appeal on.
The way I figure, if the person selling the coin wanted to get top dollar for their coin they would put up clear images so that people would be willing to bid higher. If they aren't willing to put those up they are essentially accepting a lower selling price and what dealer would do that unless they thought they would get even less than that if they did post clear pictures. Just makes it seem kind of fishy to me.
