I don't do much roll hunting but figured I'd give it a try today. I went by my bank and asked for some half dollars, quarters, dimes and nickels. She didn't understand me. I tried to explain it a little simpler, though I'm not sure how to be more clear about that and she looked at me like I was crazy. I was told by a person who works at a bank that 50 cent coins do not exist. I told her that there were a lot minted every year until recently but because it didn't show on her little paper they don't exist. I thought they may have some even though people don't usually use them. I was very surprised. I didn't think that half dollars only exist to collectors. I used to get them in change in the states.
So my question is, do you ever get half dollars when roll hunting? And if so, what bank do you get your rolls from? I went to a bmo today.
Thank you.

No, I don't get 50cent rolls either, because they were taken out of circ, they do make 175,ooo for colectors each year.......I am not sure a bank can order them....Dealers can, and individuals can for about 2 weeks in march each year then "Sold out"...Yu are in luck because the 2 weeks may be starting tommorow.......The cost is 24.95 I will say without shipping...for25 X special wrap50c,,,or 12.50 worth of money....This was a good grab by mint (Or canada gov.)around 2004 I'll guess, but even before that the mint got its hands on Juice (I call it) or collector bonus---this money or Juice is supposed to go to the collector who stores the roll for 5 or 10 or 30 years then sells it....At a profit,,,or Juice....It no longer happens because us collecters cannot say no (Me included)...We cannot get togther to "Boycott" and so we get charged juice.....I'm ranting now...So lets hear from some more of yu guys out there-about this juice..or extra charge...

Oh believe me, I was laughing my butt off. I never thought I would have to explain money to a person who works at a bank. But I do find this kind of thing happening more and more as the years go by.
I didn't expect any new stuff. I know of the double price rolls from the mint. I was just thinking that every once in a while some 80 year old man would bring in a few rolls from the 70s or 80s when they made circulation rolls. And I thought that would be the best chance of finding a silver. I'm pretty sure you can get Kennedy halfs in the states. I'm going to try it again tomorrow at my other bank and see what happens. It was kind of fun.

Oh yeah, I got that a lot whenever I tried to ask for any old coins at a bank. They all thought I was crazy. :(
I doubt one can still find rolls of silver dollars and halves as they are way bigger than the nickel versions. Either you get a roll of silver or a roll of nickel. But keep asking around. Once I found a branch who kept the "unwanted" old loose coins in a ziploc. Nothing silver in there, but I took the nickel dollars and halves anyways. The teller even thought the halves were quarters.

Ahhhh stupid. I forgot about the size. I guess you can't get a silver half in a roll of nickel halves. I was just driving by and decided to grab a few rolls spur of the moment. Didn't even think about that. However it might still be good. I know of a few that will fetch more than 50 cents if the conditions good enough. Still worth trying though. If not just for the laughs.

In the summer time I usually go to 3-5 banks in the area and ask for anything interesting... I usually do that once every week.
Last summer I made off with well over $300 in halves and dollars.. (nickle) They are out there and I found some interesting varieties... like the double yokes and such from '74..
Just keep going to the banks in your neighbourhood and the tellers will get to know you...eventually you'll get a score or two.

Are there any banks that you usually have better luck in?

Yes.. the ones in which I get to know the tellers and they know me... sometimes I can just walk into a bank and the tellers will wave me over b/c they know they have something I'm looking for...
Try to find the times where the bank is next to empty... when they're not busy they're more inclined to listen to personal requests... but if you go to a bank on a friday afternoon when there is 35 people in que... it doesn't always bode well.
