As an MTT collector I have wanted one of these for a while. Of course the issue is is it genuine? Heres a recent ebay purchase(arrived to day) the seller an Italian dealer has guaranteed authenticity. However I am like a trader based in the middle east in the 1890s. I know MTTs just a glance tells me whether the coin is genuine. But this new Italian coin is just, to me, all wrong. It has a coin orientation and worse its reeded. Of course both those features are correct its just that all my instincts say the opposite. I am hoping someone familiar with this coin can comment on it and tell me what to look for to authenticate it. Here is a photo the coin is in the Italian equivalent of a slab( if the coin is authentic it will not remain in that slab for long):

As a novice I will give this a go until experts jump in :)

1891 tallero is both reeded edge and coin alignment according to this,

Also compared to this seems very close to a genuine,

Plonker: thanks that second link gave me something to compare to. MY coin is matching the likely originals in very fine detail

It is fair to be paranoid about these coins; this is one of the dollar-sized coins being produced en-masse by the Chinese. If you wish to feed your paranoia, check out the fakes in this thread, this thread and this thread.

I suppose in part it hinges on the reputation or lack thereof of the seller. Are they someone who is experienced enough to detect most fakes?

I have never dealt with them before but from a European perspective they do everything right. Heres is their web site.

The way they advertise their service and company gives considerable reassurance. With many European companies consumer protection( by law) is considerably stronger than the USA and therefore the guarantees a company gives usually indicates reliability. I would assume they are well experienced with Italian coins. My problem is I want to be very sure the coin is genuine before I cut it out of the PVC holder. I may take it in to HD Rauch and ask them they are usually pretty reliable.

I had searched for and found the second link but missed the other two. that thread from the middle link raises questions for me. I am not so sure that coin is a fake as the thread seemed to conclude. wWhen its compared to on line photographs of PCGS and NGC slabbed examples ( I know thats not a reliable check) there is a very close match with the denticles and positioning of letters. Defintely the other two links show crude fakes.

Austro - the rims are the dead giveaway that the one in the middle link is fake. Transfer die replicated the details but not the rims or edge.

LOL Here I am a fanatic about three sided coins and I miss that incredibly obvious point.
